Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1994. 1st Edition. --'REASON AND EMOTION IN PSYCHO-THERAPY - A Comprehensive Method of Treating Human Disturbances'-- SIGNED by DR. ALBERT ELLIS, psychotherapist, author, researcher and founder of the NYC-based Albert Ellis Institute. Dr. Albert Ellis (1913-2007), American psychologist and psychotherapist, is considered one of the originators of the cognitive revolutionary paradigm shift in psychotherapy and an early proponent and developer of cognitive behavior therapies. Ellis named his approach 'rational emotive behavior therapy' (REBT). In 1947, Albert Ellis took his PhD in clinical psychology at Columbia and at that time Ellis believed psychoanalysis was the deepest and most effective form of therapy. After receiving his PhD Ellis began a Jungian analysis at the Karen Horney Institute-- but Ellis's faith in psychoanalysis was gradually crumbling. The writings of Karen Horney, Alfred Adler, Erich Fromm and Harry Sullivan Stack would be some of the influences in Ellis's thinking and play a role in shaping his psychological models. Ellis acknowledged his rational emotive therapy was "by no means entirely new". In Jan. 1953, Ellis's break with psychoanalysis was complete and he began calling himself a rational therapist. In fine collectible condition. Signed by Author(s). Book.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good-. From the collection of sociologist Ira L. Reiss, with his ink stamp on front paste-down. Dr. Reiss was a pioneering researcher and educator whose work, primarily at the University of Minnesota and as a charter member and director of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex, aimed to broaden the theoretical and scientific framework used in the study of human sexuality, the family and gender roles. In the mid-1950s, Reiss began the sociological studies that culminated in his first book, Premarital Sexual Standards in America (1960), which "predicted a sexual revolution that would start by the end of the 1960s". Shortly before he published this work, in 1956, Reiss began exchanging letters with Albert Ellis, choosing Ellis because "he was one of the most prolific and interesting authors. critically analyzing American sexual customs." The two men's professional and personal connections would continue as both played key roles in the multi-disciplinary sexology that took shape after the ground-breaking work of Alfred Kinsey, co-founding with several others the SSSS and serving as presidents, and later publishing the letters they wrote each other from 1956-1967 in the 2002 book At the Dawn of the Sexual Revolution. First printing of second edition. Lyle Stuart, 1962; no later printings indicated; 320pp. Inscribed to Ira L. Reiss and his wife Harriet on front end page ["For Harriet and Ira--Most cordially, Al"]. Binding is tight, sturdy, and square; light wear to edges of boards; a few scattered annotations by Reiss in text/margins. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First edition. Octavo. 206pp. Ownership stamp and signature of noted American psychologist Henry Guze (a co-founder, with Ellis, of both of the American Academy of Psychotherapists and the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex) on the front pastedown and front fly, else fine in a near fine dustwrapper with light wear, faintest sunning on spine, and a couple of tiny nicks and tears. Warmly lnscribed to Guze and his wife on the front fly, dated 11/15/57: "For both Henry + VivianAt work or at homeAnd let the chips fall where they may! With most affectionate regards, Al." A lovely association, with an important New Year's greeting from Ellis and his new wife laid in (see below). According to the Albert Ellis Institute, *How to Live with a Neurotic* was Ellis' first book utilizing his groundbreaking psychological technique, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). It was published five years before his magnum opus, *Reason and Emotion in Psychotherapy*. Even signed copies of Ellis's work seem to be very uncommon; this Inscribed copy is made even more impressive by a four-page New Year's greeting from Ellis and his new wife Rhoda Winter laid in, which announces the recent creation of REBT. Ellis was known for being quite cheeky, and the newsletter is a delight to read. After his introduction, he goes on to highlight some of the interesting things his new wife has been doing since their marriage. (Rhoda Winter, later Rhoda Winter Russell, was a dancer and pioneering movement therapist; they would divorce two years later.) Ellis then catches the reader up on his exploits: writing and publishing (mentioning this book), and helping organize two professional groups (the American Academy of Psychotherapists and the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex, both of which Guze, to whom the book is inscribed, helped found). His final point is made modestly: "developed a new technique of rational psychotherapy which has aroused violent enthusiasm, 99 44/100 per cent negative, among zillions of other therapists." He goes on to wish their friends, relatives, enemies, and countrymen a "GODDAM / ENJOYABLE AND RATIONAL / NEW YEAR." In the introduction to a 2001 interview with Ellis in *Psychology Today*, Robert Epstein writes, "Given these techniques [REBT] have now become mainstream, it's safe to say that no individualnot even Freud himselfhas had a greater impact on modern psychotherapy." An important title with an excellent association, accompanied by a rare piece of ephemera rather nonchalantly announcing a major breakthrough in modern psychiatry.

Unbound. Condition: Near Fine. Autograph keepsake. Two leaves removed from a notebook, joined at the crown, measuring approximately 6¾" x 8½" and with signatures on the first page only. Slight loss on the left edge during removal, vertical crease, near fine. Signed by 20 early members of the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, with an additional three signatures in another signer's hand. An autograph keepsake from a "Society Supper" at May Yee's in New York City, the society almost certainly being the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, founded in 1949. (In addition to several prominent hypnotherapists being present, four of the society's first five presidents were at table.) Notable signers include Albert Ellis, developer of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy and a major figure in 20th Century psychology, and pioneering hypnotherapists Edith Klemperer and Milton V. Kline. Another signature of note is that of Felix Spector. As reported in the *BMJ* (the weekly peer-reviewed medical trade journal published by the British Medical Association), about this time Spector began to perform orchiectomies, at first largely for men who didn't have the money to travel to Stockholm for full gender reassignment but wanted to begin the process. In the age of the internet, he would become well-known in certain circles for performing the same procedure for men desiring to become "voluntary eunuchs." The other signers, notable in their own right, several having authored books or articles on hypnotherapy or related topics, are: Henry Guze, Vivian Guze, Michael Green, H. G. Beigel, Ruth Doorbar, Samuel Glasner, Sam Saltzer, Rosemary Eultzer [?], Henry S. Tugender, Bernard Raginsky, J[acob]. H. Conn, Jean Bordeaux, Bernard Gorton, Harold and Edith Rosen, G. W. Williams, Jm [Jerome] and Sor [Shirley] Schneck, and (in Vivian Guze's hand) Nathan Israeli, Frieda Kaufman, and Dorothy Kline. An excellent collection of signatures of notable 20th Century psychologists, many with a close connection to the hypnotherapy movement.
