Ediciones Sieghels 2021, tapa: blandaEl mariscal de campo Albrecht Kesselring es el único oficial alemán de alta graduación que ostentó el mando sin interrupciones durante toda la guerra, y sin embargo su reputación ha quedado eclipsada por subordinados carismáticos como Rommel o por gallardos comandantes de fuerzas blindadas del estilo de Guderian. Hábil en la táctica y en la estrategia, Kesselring comprendía la guerra moderna en sus múltiples facetas. Destacó como diplomático y como comandante militar. A pesar de que su nombre no sea de los más conocidos, cualquier experto puede atestiguar que fue uno de los talentos militares más sobresalientes de la contienda de 1939-1945. Su mando enérgico y extremadamente eficaz quedó demostrado en todos los escenarios en los que participó, pero especialmente durante la campaña de Italia. Como comandante en jefe del Mar Mediterráneo y responsable de la defensa de Italia, este excelente militar, aun con medios muy reducidos, convirtió el viejo «Marenostrum» en una pesadilla para los Aliados estableciendo un plan defensivo que acabó con la paciencia de los atacantes, convirtiendo su avance en una lenta y dolorosa sangría. Lo más destacado de Kesselring en la Luftwaffe fue la remodelación de este cuerpo gracias a que tenía una visión muy especial del conjunto tierra-aire tras haber servido anteriormente en la artillería, convirtiendo a todos los aviones de la fuerza aérea en unas máquinas adaptadas para al nuevo tipo de guerra que estaba por venir, básicamente como elemento de apoyo a la infantería y los tanques con la finalidad de romper el frente en los momentos clave. Toda la Luftwaffe que previamente había estado Kesselring preparando, obtuvo un éxito arrollador en todas las campañas en que participó al comienzo de la guerra. A finales de Noviembre de 1941, Kesselring fue nombrado comandante en jefe del Frente del Mediterráneo, siendo su teatro de operaciones el «Marenostrum», el Norte de África, los Balcanes y el sur de Francia. Su presencia nada más tomar el mando fue un éxito, pues durante la primera mitad de 1942 sus aviones neutralizaron la Isla de Malta; permitieron al mariscal Erwin Rommel reconquistar Libia y Egipto con el Afrika Korps; y provocaron elevadas pérdidas a la Real Marina Británica (Royal Navy) y a sus mercantes. Desde mediados de 1943, Kesselring fue el mariscal alemán que más triunfos consiguió dentro de una guerra que comenzaba a ser desfavorable al Eje. Sabiamente se aprovechó de la geografía italiana plagada de montañas, valles, ríos, rocas y pueblos, para aferrarse encarnizadamente al terreno. Sobre la «Línea Gustav» frenó durante más de medio año a los Aliados en la Abadía de Montecassino tras causarles más de 50.000 bajas. Simultáneamente dejó atrapados a los anglo-americanos desembarcados en Anzio a quienes provocó otras 30.000 bajas. Incluso después de la caída de Roma el 4 de Junio de 1944, unos kilómetros más arriba paralizó de nuevo a los Aliados en la «Línea Gótica» situada entre los Apeninos, Toscana y Emilia-Romaña, donde permanecerían estancados todo el resto de la Segunda Guerra Mundial sin poder avanzar mientras consumían recursos y se incrementaban enormemente sus muertos y heridos. Un militar capaz de levantar una fuerza aérea y de comandar la aviación en cuatro grandes campañas (Polonia, 1939; Holanda, Bélgica y Francia, 1940, Gran Bretaña, 1940-1941 y Rusia, 1941), antes de convertirse en comandante supremo de un teatro de operaciones cuyas responsabilidades atañían a las operaciones navales, aéreas y terrestres de las fuerzas del Eje en el frente, ha de ser, por fuerza, único. Sin los focos de propaganda detrás de él, sólo con su carisma y sus logros sobresalientes, ejerció tanta influencia sobre Adolf Hitler (hombre escéptico y desconfiado) como el Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring y como el gran almiran.
