About this Item: Harper & Brothers, New York, New York, 1870. Condition: Good. First printing. Single volume--six issues bound without covers and advertisements. Small quarto, 9 3/4" tall, 944 pages, quarter leather with black cloth over boards. A good, originl hard cover with significant shelf wear, rubbed at all extremities, leather worn through to boards at four corner tips, back strip leather loose at the front hinge; hinges cracked but secure and binding solid, paper light to moderately yellowed. This is the publisher's edition, printed from the original plates and includes all of the editorial material (articles, stories, poetry, etc.) of the separate issues but lacks the advertisements and individual covers. It was the practice of the time for most of the better literary magazines to issue such editions before melting down the original printers' plates. Note: ''Harper's Magazine' began publication in 1850 and recreated the American magazine, serving as a promotional vehicle for Harper and Brothers books as well as the new 'literary' fiction and essay of the time, using sophisticated illustration and the best authors. Subject matters range from art, fiction, and poetry to history and science. As such it makes a terrific read as an anthology of its moment in time. An excellent resource. Three-quarter leather over cloth. Seller Inventory # 44852

About this Item: Equity Publishing Corporation, Orford NH, 1965. Hard cover. Burt, R Alden (Illustrations by) (illustrator). LOC # 65-22707;. 164 p. Includes illustrations. Full page and chapter heading illustrations, pen&ink style; all illus and text in brown ink. 3-color (brn, red, blue) wraparound illus cover, young men & boys inside log building w/ rifles, on lookout. History footnotes. George Israel Putnam (1860-1937) resided in Charlestown, NH, from 1906 to 1923. His early years included Charlestown, West Point Class of 1885 and 4 years in the military, then to journalism in Denver, New York City, and Claremont, NH. The Fort at No. 4 sat where downtown Charlestown is now, and a replica Living History Museum was built just north along the Connecticut River, and continues today to serve as an education cultural tourism center in Sullivan County. The Fort was the northernmost outpost as settlers moved upriver from Massachusetts and Connecticut. Too often, area natives kidnapped colonists (for ransom by the French in the north), burned crops, and combated over territory. Putnam, in his foreword, reminds that challenges among colonists were set against a backdrop of European monarchial ambition amd power plays. Caution: he does have historic bias in describing the region's natives, who history now knows were Abenaki. This historical novel has other value in understanding the pre-Revolutionary era of the American expansion by families into wilderness, with only the tools for self-sufficiency. Fine in good dust jacket. Gold & red sticker inside front cover: "Property of Inter-Lakes School District, Meredith, NH"; very clean. DJ small chips, tears; sm pieces missing spine ends.
