INSCRIBED IN REAR (on recto of original endpaper) "From the library of my father, Eugene Field." AND SIGNED BY EUGENE FIELD II, who adds the date, Sept 12, 1924. PRESENTATION COPY, BOLDLY INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY HARRY D SICKLES, 1927. Sickles and Eugene Field II sold off Eugene Field's library one piece at a time, and Sickles (or EFII) forged the signatures of various luminaries of the elder Field's time (Remington, Twain, Kipling, Teddy Roosevelt, etc.) on books to add to the value; the even sold several fake Abraham Lincoln signatures! Whether or not this actually came from Field's library is not proven, but the backstory is interesting.

Fading and rubbing to binding, with one or two small marks to board. There is a misprint in the gilt crest, seen in a few other works awarded as prize bindings by Forest School, Walthamstow, which was founded in 1834. Ink prize inscription dated 1879. In a later binding of brown full morocco, with raised bands, gilt titles to spine, and gilt and blind decoration to boards, dated August 1930 in pencil to first blank. Top edge gilt, with patterned endpapers. A touch of light spotting to first and final leaves, otherwise crisp and clean internally. Some rubbing to joints. Very good. A classic selection of pithy philosophic essays by the father of modern scientific empiricism.

Engraving on title-page, title-page printed in red and black Title-page cut a little close with text just shaved at foot, a little damage to sides and spine slightly darkened, a little foxing to end-papers, otherwise a very nice copy; book-label comprising two intertwined letter "S" surmounted by a coronet Full blue morocco, upper cover gilt sun-like ornament enclosing a coronet and initials "M.S", spine with raised bands and lettered and dated in gilt, turn-ins with gilt fillets and a roll of palmettes, by Worsfold.
