Hardcover. Condition: New. Aleister Crowley (illustrator). 1st Edition. York Beach, Maine: The Teitan Press, 2013. NEW / SIGNED Book Launch copy, June 7th, 2013. One of 418, Hand Numbered Copies, Additionally Signed by Richmond and Tibet. From the Publisher (see image): A Book of Sketches reproduces in full a series of colour and black and white sketches, mostly of women, from a sketchbook utilised by Aleister Crowley from the late 1930s through the early 1940s that is now preserved in the Yorke collection in London. While the 45 plates include a number of finished drawings, most are unpolished designs, possibly "roughs" for later more detailed compositions. Although hardly examples of "high art," they offer a fascinating glimpse of Crowley's process of imagining his art, and the varied styles with which he experimented. Several of the portraits are identifiable as known lovers of Crowley's, notably Catherine Falconer and "Alice" (probably Alice Sutherland - his mistress for more than three years), whilst at least one other appears to be a representation of his ill-fated wife, Maria ("Marie") Teresa de Miramar. With a five page Introduction by Crowley art aficionados David Tibet and Keith Richmond. The book is a hardcover, landscape format 8vo. (6 x 9 inches: approx. 15.2 x 22.9cm), xii + [45 plates each printed on rectos only]. Fine black cloth spine with gilt lettering, charcoal papered boards with gilt title and facsimile Crowley signature to front board, full colour plates, charcoal end pages. Sewn, printed on heavy weight acid-free art paper. 45 full page plates. First Edition/Signed/Hand Numbered. Hard Cover, Cloth Spine, Sewn. New/No Jacket, As Issued. Illus. by Aleister Crowley. Hardcover. First edition. This first edition copy has been signed by Frater Hymenaeus Alpha who wrote the Preface to this edition, the first published collection of the fourteen Holy Books received by Crowley. It could well be called the bible of Thelema. Crowley considered these books to be theophanies--divinely inspired and beyond criticism. They form the kernel of his developmental system, and reveal the essence of his mission to mankind. This collection was prepared by Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.) using painstaking editorial techniques to reproduce the most reliable source for each book. Every effort has been made to adhere to the formal prerequisites for publication. Technical questions were resolved in accordance with Crowley's instructions wherever possible. A comprehensive preface by Frater Hymenaeus Alpha, Caliph of the O.T.O., surveys the sensitive issues concerning the editorial handling of revealed material. Crowley's writings concerning the Holy Books are excerpted, including his diaries for the period. Through these, the chronology of the Holy Books' reception is outlined for the first time. In addition, Crowley's own summary of his magical development up to the reception of the Holy Books is given its first publication, editorially referenced to his widely-available 'Confessions'. A synthetic synopsis provides the reader with a concise introduction to each Holy Book in Crowley's own words, conveniently arranged by title for ease of study. Three appendices have been prepared especially for this edition: An in-depth study of the Stele of Revealing that includes three separate translations of the Egyptian text of this link with antiquity. Also included is the first authentic photograph to be published in the magical literature. A comprehensive list of Thelemic technical writings, arranged by number, class and title, and finally an annotated bibliography of the Holy Books. The traditional "Hello", the #93 is stamped under the half-title page. A near fine clean copy (small bookstore label to bottom of the half-title page) in a near fine clean dust jacket.

Letter. Condition: Fine. Although Crowley is not mentioned by name the letter refers to 'our mutual friend' and continues by wondering how he manages to live in Kensington with his wife in such state - 'How does he do it?' Signed G.K. and handwritten on headed paper: 4, Park Row, Knightsbridge, S.W.1. Sent to the recipient with a copy of 'his latest publication' and originally purchased by the present owner with a first edition copy of Magick in Theory and Practice. Dated 8.vii.30. It was thought that the author of the letter was G.K. Chesterton, but further research by one of my customers - to whom I'm eternally grateful - revealed it was Captain Guy John Fenton Knowles a keen mountaineer. When he was 22 he proved to be a valued member of a British expedition to K2 in 1902 with Oscar Eckenstein and Aleister Crowley. K2 is the world's second highest mountain (it was considered the highest at the time) and the first in terms of dangerousness - it wasn?t scaled until 1954. Although a world record at the time the expedition was plagued with illness and bad weather, and there was an incident when Crowley brandished a gun at Knowles. I?ve read somewhere Guy kept the Colt revolver for the rest of his life as a souvenir. Knowles was educated at Rugby and Trinity College, he studied the Mechanical Sciences and had a successful career as an Engineer at the Iris Car Company and later in aeronautical engineering. Guy served in the Royal Garrison Artillery, and was twice mentioned in despatches and awarded the French Croix de Guerre and the Greek Military Cross. He also gifted in his will a remarkable collection of works of art to the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. Further research notes included. Single sheet headed notepaper only, 13 x 17.5cm, slight age discolouration otherwise fine. Signed by Author(s).

Deluxe limited edition. Signed by the author. Publisher's original green and gilt padded boards, with titles in gilt to the upper board and spine, in dustwrapper. All edges gilt. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the lower board with a little paper residue from the underside of the dustwrapper. Complete with the rubbed and marked dustwrapper that has a faint stain to the right edge of the upper panel and some damp marking to the underside. This deluxe issue is limited to 200 copies of which this example is numbered 55 and signed twice by Marcelo Motta (once as '666' and again with his normal signature), and also [most unusually] in red ink by Jeremy Charles Ellis. Motta was reclusive and notoriously averse to signing his works, this is the only volume of his Equinox series that was issued as a signed limited edition. In May 1978 Jeremy Charles Ellis was nominated by Motta a representative of the Society Ordo Templi Orientis in London with instruction to stop the Crowleyan publications of Kenneth Grant and John Symonds. Taking Motta's orders literally he was arrested and jailed in 1982 for the attempted arson of the offices of Grant's publisher Routledge and Kegan Paul. He committed suicide in 1983. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.
