Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Inscribed ''for David / Jesse Alexander'' on title page. First printing. Black cloth with silver lettering on spine and front cover. Interior is clean and unmarked. Dust jacket shows very slight edge wear; not price clipped; in an archival mylar sleeve. 95 pages. 13 x 11 inches. Album of sports car race photography by the American motorsports photographer Jesse Alexander (1929-1921), featuring images taken during the period 1953-1966 at races in France, Italy, Monte Carlo, Morocco, Belgium, Germany, England, and the United States. From his revealing portraits of famous drivers to his vivid images of action at Le Mans and classic grand prix circuits, Jesse Alexander's photographs have appeared in countless magazines, books, and galleries. But these well-known images represent only a small portion Alexander's work. For every photograph that racing fans already know, thousands more have remained largely unseen. Inside The Archives brings the best of these rare images, to light for the first time, revealing a fresh, often unexpected side of Alexander's art and the world of cars and racing. A large (13-1/4 by 20 inches) gelatin silver print (black-and-white) photograph of the American racing legend Bob Bondurant (1933-2021), taken in 1965 by one of the great racing photographers of all time, Jesse Alexander. Bondurant reclines in the cockpit of a Carroll Shelby GT40 at Le Mans; he didn't finish the race but that year he did win the FIA Manufacturers' World Championship for Shelby American. Darrin Prescott played Bondurant in a small role in the Matt Damon-Christian Bale film Ford vs. Ferrari. After his racing career, Bondurant founded a race driving school; Christian Bale learned to drive for Ford vs. Ferrari at Bondurant's School of High Performance Driving. There is a full-page reproduction of this image in Jesse Alexander's book Portraits. The image is signed by Alexander in ink in the lower right border of the image. The photograph is on paper measuring 16-3/4 by 22 inches, mounted with tape along the top edge in an acid-free offwhite mat. The tape is affixed to the back (verso) of the paper only. The image is fine, with good contrast and tonal range, from near black to near white. A terrific racing image.
