New edition of this famous work; it was indexed upon its publication. It is illustrated with seven frontispieces by Eisen and seven fold-out maps by Bonne (three of which are repeated). The work is by Abbé Raynal, with the collaboration of Diderot and d'Holbach for the philosophical section, Dutesta for information on trade and customs in the Indies, Pechmèja, Abbé Martin de Deleyre, Aranda, etc. The work was a great success and is divided into four main sections: the East Indies, South America, the Antilles (and the slave trade), and North America with a review of Europe and its colonies. The third edition, published in 1780, was condemned by the censors.
