About this Item: The Macmillan Company, New York, 1947. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: good +. Stilwell, Alison (illustrator). First Edition. Quarto size, [48] pp., inscribed by the author. Alison Stilwell (1921-1991) was the daughter of General Joseph Stilwell (serving in the China Burma India Theater during World War II), and therefore lived the greater part of her life in China. She was a distinguished authority on oriental art, and her exquisite artwork drawn with a Chinese brush technique gives to the numerous illustrations of this book the delicate tone so characteristic of Chinese art (N.B., info from dust jacket flap). This delightful story is about a young boy who saves a cricket from a street vendor and cares for him, teaching him to wrestle - cricket wrestling being a popular sport in the China of the day (and one which rarely results in injury to the animals).___DESCRIPTION: Bound in a light orange cloth with dark green lettering on the front and spine, inscribed by the author and illustrator Alison Stilwell on the half-title page in the year of publication: "For Jean, whose encouragement helped / Chin Ling hop along the rough road to / publication. / Affectionately, / Alison" with her full name and the date below: "Alison Stilwell / December, 1947", frontispiece a full-colour illustration of Chin Ling, lavishly illustrated story with both full- and half-page illustrations, many in colour; quarto size (10.25" by 8"), [48] pp. With the dust jacket showing the original $2.25 price, wrap-around illustration (the front of which) mirrors the frontispiece, summary of book on the front flap, short author bio on back flap.___CONDITION: Volume near fine with clean binding, a strong text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and other than the author's inscription, free of prior owner markings. The dust jacket shows the original price on the bottom of the front flap (for some reason, the opposite corner of the flap is clipped); it is almost very good; we rating as good plus as there are several chips, most noticably at the head of the spine, with slight loss to the author's name, another smaller chip at the tail of the spine (no loss of text), other smaller chips along the edges, some darkening to the beige background of the jacket.___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Please contact us with any questions you may have, we are here to help. Seller Inventory # 13080833
