Octavo, cloth (hardcover), gilt lettering, 36 pp + [iv] pp ads. Very Good. From Preface: The need for a small book of this type arose in the work of teaching the use of the slide rule to engineering and industrial students; and this Manual is a direct result of sets of notes issued to classes consisting of engineering students and men of more or less practical experience. The book is not a treatise in any sense, its aim being to develop the ideas of the operator rather than to give empirical rules. Those rules that have been given are for the purpose of training the student in the formulation of processes, and it is not intended that they shall ever be committed to memory. The examples have been taken largely from Hydraulics and Mechanics, and while the actual field covered by specific problems is narrow, the idea has been to make them fundamental. It is hoped that these examples will serve the purpose of development better than the more specialized problems arising in different branches of engineering. Education, Mathematics, Engineering, Industry, Slide Rule, Schoolbooks TWS.

This book delves into the principles and applications of using the slide rule, a quintessential tool for performing complex calculations quickly and efficiently, once ubiquitous in science and engineering. Starting with the basics of accuracy and significant figures, the author guides readers through the intricacies of the slide rule, explaining its construction, scales, and principles of operation. Proficiency in decimal point setting and scale reading are explored, followed by detailed instructions on multiplication, division, and finding squares and square roots. The inverted slide, used for specialized calculations, is also thoroughly explained. The book then explores various special forms and equations encountered in real-world applications, such as those involving fractional exponents, logarithms, and trigonometric functions. The author emphasizes the versatility of the slide rule in solving engineering problems, showcasing its utility in areas like beam design, fluid flow analysis, and heat transfer. This book serves as a valuable resource for students, engineers, and scientists seeking to master the slide rule and enhance their problem-solving abilities. By understanding the concepts and techniques presented, readers will gain a deeper appreciation for the historical significance and practical applications of this remarkable tool. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. This book introduces the reader to the slide rule, a simple yet powerful analog computer that provides remarkable accuracy given its simplicity. First invented in the 1600s, slide rules were widely used by scientists and engineers through the 1970s before the advent of electronic calculators. The slide rule, in addition to its historical importance, provides an excellent demonstration of many mathematical concepts. Users must have a good understanding of logarithms to use a slide rule, and the author provides several methods for using logs to perform multiplication, division, and exponentiation. The author also describes numerous special scales and techniques that make the slide rule particularly well-suited to solving problems in physics and engineering. Through the study of the slide rule, this book provides a unique perspective on the power and the limitations of analog computation. Its use requires not only mathematical knowledge but also an understanding of scientific notation and estimation. It is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of computing, or who wishes to gain a deeper understanding of the mathematical underpinnings of science and engineering. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
