First Edition
Octavo. [6], xvi, 237 pp. Engraved portrait. First edition of an apocryphal work, purported to be the memoirs of Rousseau's mistress and onetime mentor, Louise Eleonore de la Tour du Pil, Baronne de Warens (1700-64). The author is Amde Doppet (1753-1800), who led the army of the Alps and directed the siege of Lyons in 1793. Rousseau lived in Chambry from 1732 to 1740 with Warens and her gardener, Claude Anet (b. 1697) in an apparent mnage trois. Anet taught Rousseau about botany, which became a continuing interest; Rousseau's Lettres Elementaires Sur La Botanique was published in 1771-73. Cioranescu 25064. Conlon 707. [Bound with:] [Chas, Francois]. Reflexions philosophiques et impartiales sur J.J. Rousseau & Mad. de Warens. A Geneve: 1786. Octavo 78 pp. First edition of an uncommon Rousseau commentary. OCLC lists four copies (UCLA, Princeton, McGill and Cambridge). Cioranescu 16975. Conlon 707. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt-ruled covers, gilt spine with burgundy morocco label, edges sprinkled red. Corners, head of spine lightly worn, some light browning, a few light pencil marks in text. Still, a very good copy.
