Bei mehreren Fällen von Melancholie hat nun Freud psychoanalytisch festgestellt, daß Selbstvorwürfe und Klagen der Kranken ihren Sinn erst bekommen, wenn man erkennt, daß sie eigentlich gegen eine andere Person gerichtet sind. Es ist also diese Person, die früher Objekt der Liebe des Kranken gewesen war, in die Seele des Kranken einverleibt worden, nachdem der Kranke an ihr eine schwere Enttäuschung erlitten hatte. Aus der Objektliebe ist Ich-Liebe, Narzißmus, geworden; die Enttäuschung, das Leid ist nun nicht mehr das Objekt betreffend, sondern die eigene Person. Bei den Melancholikern ist ihre Liebe aber stets stark ambivalent, mit Haß verbunden gewesen; der Haß wendet sich mit der Umwendung der enttäuschten Liebe vom Objekte zur eigenen Person gleichfalls gegen dieselbe. Schließlich ist ein besonders starker Sadismus, d. h. ein Zurücksinken auf den Sadismus für die meisten Melancholien charakteristisch. "Erst dieser Sadismus löst uns das Rätsel der Selbstmordeignung, durch welche die Melancholie so interessant und so - gefährlich wird. Wir haben als den Urzustand, von dem das Triebleben ausgeht, eine so großartige Selbstliebe des Ich's erkannt, wir sehen in der Angst, die bei Lebensbedrohung auftritt, einen so riesigen Betrag der narzißtischen Libido frei werden, daß wir es nicht erfassen, wie dieses Ich seiner Selbstzerstörung zustimmen könne. Wir wußten zwar längst, daß kein Neurotiker Selbstmordabsichten verspürt, der solche nicht von einem Mordimpuls gegen andere auf sich zurückwendet, aber es blieb unverständlich, durch welches Kräftespiel eine solche Absicht sich zur Tat durchsetzen kann.
