Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 `1/2") bound in original publisher's red cloth with black lettering to spine and cover in original pictorial jacket. First edition. Commissar Krilenko, penned in inks of every brilliant color, presents the lies of the members of the Polivanov family, which prior to the Revolution, ranked high among the Russian nobility. Scattered by the uncontrollable violence of the new proletariat regime, the Polivanovs escape to the various parts of Russia, all but the son Dmitri, who has made his way into Switzerland. Concealing their identity, they assume whatever occupations are offered by the new government, slowly adjusting themselves to new and arduous modes of life. Natalya, the daughter, falls in love with a former nobleman, and both are sentenced to death for sabotage. Dmitri is believed to have lost his life in the World War, but has actually been inducted into the astonishing role in the Soviet regime. Condition: Inscription to previous owner on front end paper, previous owner's name on front paste down. Jacket Corners and spine ends chipped with some loss, edge wear with chips and tears, spine sunned else a very good copy in about very good jacket.
