"Anson Daniel Morse (1846-1916) was an educator and historian who was for many years a professor at Amherst College. He was a leader in a small group of scholars who in the last quarter of the nineteenth century began to emphasize political parties as the most effective tool in expressing the popular will. Morse's studies in the history and theory of political parties go back to the beginning of his teaching at Amherst. Some of his writings on pary leaders and party movements appeared prior to 1891. It was in 1891, however, that he published his first theoretical article on party with the title 'The Place of Party in the Political System'. At the time little had been written on the theory or philosophy of the political party. Two other notable articles on the subject of party in the years 1891-1896 were What is Party, and The Natural History of Party." from the Introduction.
