Ouvrage compilé à partir des journaux de John Bulkeley, John Cummins, Alexander Campbell, Isaac Morris et d'un auteur demeuré anonyme. Relation française du naufrage du HMS Wager, bâtiment de l'escadre du commodore George Anson partie de Portsmouth en août 1740 afin d'attaquer les possessions espagnoles du Pacifique. Après un passage extrêmement éprouvant du cap Horn, le Wager fit naufrage en mai 1741 sur une île désolée au large de la Patagonie. Le récit décrit la survie des rescapés, les dissensions internes, la mutinerie et les versions contradictoires livrées par les officiers et matelots revenus en Angleterre. Parmi les survivants figurait John Byron, alors enseigne de vaisseau, futur vice-amiral et grand-père du poète Lord Byron. Cette relation complète et nuance le célèbre Voyage autour du monde d'Anson, auquel elle sert explicitement de suite.
