NOTE: Text block is set loosely in vellum binding. 958 pages. An easy but professional repair. Vellum is in good+ condition. No labels, headers are in tact. Text block is sound. Light inscription (pencil?) signed and dated 1888 on verso of engraved frontispiece. Evenly tanned paper. A professor at the University of Leipzig, Klausing published numerous English grammars, dictionaries, and translations for German and Danish readers. His works were among the most popular for English-language learning in Germany in the 18th and 19th centuries. Bailey was a pioneer of English lexicography, and changed the scope of dictionaries of the language. Up to the early eighteenth century, English dictionaries had generally focused on "hard words" and their explanation. Samuel Johnson made an interleaved copy the foundation of his own Johnson's Dictionary. Bailey's dictionary was also the basis of English-German dictionaries. In 1727, Sigmund Steinbart founded a bookshop and printing press in an orphanage in Züllichau which was managed by Gottlieb Benjamin Frommann.
