Firma autografa che identifica l'esemplare come appartenuto, al celebre storico dell'arte ed Accademico d'Italia, direttore della Biblioteca Estense di Modena, Giulio Bariola al margine alto del piatto anteriore ed in iniziali, alla prima carta bianca. Non comune edizione di questa favola medioevale francese che rappresenta il primo esempio di favola raccontata e cantata allo stesso tempo. L'opera risale probabilmente alla fine del XII o all'inizio del XIII secolo ed è nota per un solo manoscritto superstite, scoperto nel 1752 dal medievalista Jean-Baptiste de La Curne de Sainte-Palaye (BnF, Fonds Français 2168). Stilisticamente, il chantefable combina elementi di molti generi dell'antico francese, come la chanson de geste (ad esempio, La canzone di Roland), poesie liriche e romanzi di corte, forme letterarie già consolidate nel XII secolo. Aucassin et Nicolette è l'unico chantefable conosciuto, il termine stesso è stato derivato dalle righe conclusive della storia: "No cantefable prent fin" ("Il nostro chantefable sta volgendo al termine").
