Helen Lowell (1866-1937) was an American theater and film actress. She made her first professional appearance as Iolanthe at New York's Academy of Music. She played many different characters on stage such as Mrs. Errol in Little Lord Fauntleroy, Charlotte Corday, and Mrs. Hazy in Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch. She toured in the mainland United States, Hawai'i, Australia, and New Zealand. Lowell moved to Hollywood in 1934 where she began her film acting career. One of the movies she appeared in was Side Streets, a Warner Brothers production. A small photographer's imprint appears on this photo, "Apeda, 19, N.Y." This imprint is from Apeda Studio of New York. It was founded in 1906 as a business partnership between Alexander W. Dreyfoos and Henry Obstfield. The company was incorporated in 1914. Until the 1920s, Apeda focused on printing portrait photos and scenes from famous events. After this, Apeda shifted its focus to Armed Services portraits, high school yearbooks, and a variety of commercial subject matter. Apeda remained in business until the 1990s.
