Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. First Edition. The 1897 Two Volume First Edition. Mild tanning to the gutters. Ink name and short inscription in Volume 1. Two approx 1" half circle age darkened spots caused by the 'access cutout' for the two map pockets. Probably present in all copies. Overall a very clean and bright set with minimal wear. All 4 Maps present in pockets at the front and rear. A much better-than-average example of a set prone to wear due to its size and multiple inserted plates. ; 2; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 2 volumes (xiii, 587, xi,729 pages + [iv] pages of advertisements at end of vol. 2. Large 8vo (24 cm.). Original decorative dark gray cloth with gilt lettering on top and spine. Top edges gilt. Jagged edges. Frontispiece in each volume (one etched, one engraving with tissue guard). "About 120 Full-page and numerous in-text Illustrations, 16 Colored Plates in Facsimile from Dr. Nansen's Own Sketches (with tissue protection), Etched Portrait, engravings, and 4 Maps". Maps are folded in pockets (front and end of volume 1). "Narrative of the First Fram Expedition, 1893-96, led by Nansen, with the object of investigating the polar basin north of Eurasia by drifting in the ice with the currents northwest from the New Siberian Islands across or near the Pole.". They achieved the closest approach to the North Pole at that time. Ex-libris pasted on inside cover "Lumen Coeleste Sequamur" (Translation : May We Follow Heavenly Inspiration). Title page of vol. 2 is loose. Else a very nice set printed on glossy paper.
