Kaye & Ward, London. 1970 first edition ISBN 0718208080 160pp Illustrated Hardback. This copy is in fine unmarked condition. The price clipped dust wrapper has some edge wear but is still fine. A fascinating and authoritative look at this attractive breed focusing on hunting in packs and breeding both for the field and for the home. Beagling has always been one of the most accessible, and least publicised of the field sports. You don't need a horse as hounds are followed on foot (unlike Fox hunting and Stag Hunting),unlike shooting or fishing there's no inital outlay needed on equiptment the field fee or 'cap' is only a few pounds and the only 'kit' needed is a coat and a pair of stout shoes/boots or trainers you don't mind getting muddy. However, if you've never been out before and want to know more about the sport, then this book is an excellent place to start. The authors use very little jargon, the book also contains line drawings and photographs to illustrate certain points. It tries to explain hound work, so you know what you're looking for and shed some light on the 'black art' of scent. The history of beagling and that of the hounds used for it. As well as some of the obvious do's and donts, and the things you wouldn't expect. If you're thinking of starting beagling, or want to know more about it, this book is a must. Ref EE6.
