Three Quarter Buckram. Condition: Fair. First Edition. FIRST EDITION signed by Louis Raemaekers. Limited edition (1 of 1050). Three quarter white buckram with white-beige marbled boards blindstamped with the white signature of Louis Raemaekers. The signature on the board is well chipped and difficult to read Moderate rubbing with a chip to the marbling at the bottom left of the spine. Heavy edge wear. Maroon calf leather label on spine with heavye wear. Fraying to the buckram at top & bottom of spine with an an extensive 5" split at back cover & spine. Gilt lettering on label and gilt design to spine. Bookplate of Lenox Library behind front cover. Binding is very weak with webbing visible at the gutter behind boards. frontispiece illustration in color torn at the glue at bottom not affecting the body of the image. Signed by Louis Raemaekers in pencil below the photo. All one hundred plates are in EXCELLENT condition except for the frontispiece (as noted above). Only SIGNED COPY available online. Louis Raemaekers (April 6, 1869 in Roermond - July 26, 1956 in Scheveningen) was a Dutch painter and cartoonist for the Amsterdam Telegraaf during World War I, noted for his anti-German stance. He was born in Roermond, Netherlands in 1869 as the son of an ethnically German newspaper editor. He worked for the Algemeen Handelsblad from 1906 to 1909. His graphic cartoons depicted the rule of the German military in Belgium, portrayed the Germans as barbarians and Kaiser Wilhelm II as an ally of Satan. The German government offered a reward of 12, 000 guilders for Raemaekers, dead or alive. The German government forced the Dutch government to place Raemaekers on trial for 'endangering Dutch neutrality', but a jury acquitted him. He later left for England because of the bounty on his head. There, his work was published in The Times and he released a collection, Raemaekers Cartoon History of the War, in 1919. 150 of his works toured the United Kingdom and France in an exhibit.
