Limited edition of 1150 copies. Quarter-cloth and boards, gilt spine-title and decoration, title-page in red and black, fore-and lower edges uncut, 24 cm. xlviii, 278, [1] pp, 1 plate. From the introduction - "Not one of the early translators has such a smack of the idiom of Tyndale and Cranmer s Bible as the obscure and mysterious William Adlington. He is inaccurate without a doubt and avoids every difficulty in his original without a qualm. He omits passages propter honestatem in a way most reprehensible to the inverted purist of to-day. But he fetches something of the choiceness and rarity of the Elizabethan spirit into his work, and certainly in our own speech has never been superseded." Booklabel of Conrad P. Fry (1865-1940, sometime managing director of J. S. Fry &: Sons the chocolate manufacturers) on front pastedown endpaper. Boards a little marked, fore-edge of front board slightly bumped, otherwise Good.
