stiff paper wrappers. van Maerlant, Jacob (illustrator). 8vo. stiff paper wrappers. li, 268, (2) pages. Limited edition of 600 numbered copies. A biographical essay and bibliography of Jacob van Maerlant, a thirteenth-century Dutch pioneer in the field of didactic poetry. Using his extensive knowledge of both French and Latin, van Maerlant wrote poetry and created adaptations of medieval romances, and historical, hagiographical, and scientific works popular throughout Europe in his native language, in order to quench the thirst for instructive reading in the vernacular that was growing among the new bourgeoisie. The introductory essay by Dr. J. Van Mierlo, S.J. seems to offer arguments for a particular reconstruction of van Maerlant's life, work, and legacy based on bibliographic evidence. The catalogue contains sections devoted to the writings of van Maerlant and their various printed editions, as well as volumes written about van Maerlant himself. Indices on the writings of van Maerlant and names in the catalogue appear at its end. Loosely inserted is a commemorative book label that indicates that this volume came from the reference library of H.P. Kraus purchased by Oak Knoll Books at the auction sale.
