Paperback. Condition: Good. Introduced by Francis Fergusson, the Poetics, written in the fourth century B.C., is still an essential study of the art of drama, indeed the most fundamental one we have. It has been used by both playwrights and theorists of many periods, and interpreted, in the course of its two thousand years of life, in various ways. The literature which has accumulated around it is, as Mr. Fergusson points out, "full of disputes so erudite that the nonspecialist can only look on in respectful silence." But the Poetics itself is still with us, in all its suggestiveness, for the modern reader to make use of in his turn and for his own purposes. Francis Fergusson's lucid, informative, and entertaining Introduction will prove invaluable to anyone who wishes to understand and appreciate the Poetics. Using Sophocles' Oedipus Rex, as Aristotle did, to illustrate his analysis, Mr. Fergusson pints out that Aristotle did not lay down strict rules, as is often thought: "The Poetics," he says, "is much more like a cookbook than it is like a textbook of elementary engineering." Read in this way, it is an essential guide not only to Sophoclean tragedy, but to the work of so modern a playwright as Bertolt Brecht, who considered his own "epic drama" the first non-Aristotelian form.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The writings of Greek philosopher ARISTOTLE (384BC-322BC)--student of Plato, teacher of Alexander the Great--are among the most influential on Western thought, and indeed upon Western civilization itself. From theology and logic to ethics and even biology, there is no area of human knowledge that has not been touched by his thinking. In Politics--considered a companion piece to Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics--the philosopher discusses the nature of the state, of citizenship, of public education and private wealth. In what is a response to the works of his teacher Plato, Aristotle explores the idea of the individual household as a microcosm and building block of the state; examines trade and the economy as functions of human affairs; discusses the battle between self-interest and nationalism; and much more. This edition features the classic introduction by H.W.C. Davis, the renowned English historian of the early 20th century. Students of philosophy, government, and human nature continue to find Aristotle's Politics a provocative work more than two millennia after it was written.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Written sometime in the 4th Century BC, Aristotle's Rhetoric is the definitive treatise on the art of persuasive public speaking. The art of oratorical persuasion was an essential skill for the successful politician during the days of ancient Greece and Aristotle's Rhetoric is considered one of the greatest works from antiquity on the subject. Like many of the surviving works attributable to Aristotle, Rhetoric was not intended for public dissemination, but was likely composed from notes taken by Aristotle's students as they absorbed his lectures. Aristotle provides a detailed analysis of the basic elements of effective speaking in the forum of public debate. Aristotle felt that persuasive discourse was essential for reaching consensus on public issues and, in Rhetoric, makes the important and modern argument that such persuasive speaking in the public forum should be based on logic and knowledge rather than on emotion and manipulation. While written over two thousand years ago, the modern student of political science and law will find much that is useful and applicable to their respective disciplines in this work. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Aristotle's life was primarily that of a scholar. However, like the other ancient philosophers, it was not the stereotypical ivory tower existence. His father was court physician to Amyntas I of Macedon, so Aristotle grew up in a royal household. Aristotle also knew Philip of Macedon (son of Amyntas I) and there is a tradition that says Aristotle tutored Philip's son Alexander, who would later be called the Great after expanding the Macedonian Empire all the way to what is now India. Clearly, Aristotle had significant firsthand experience with politics, though scholars disagree about how much influence, if any, this experience had on Aristotle's thought. There is certainly no evidence that Alexander's subsequent career was much influenced by Aristotle's teaching, which is uniformly critical of war and conquest as goals for human beings and which praises the intellectual, contemplative lifestyle. It is noteworthy that although Aristotle praises the politically active life, he spent most of his own life in Athens, where he was not a citizen and would not have been allowed to participate directly in politics. Aristotle studied under Plato at Plato's Academy in Athens, and eventually opened a school of his own (the Lyceum) there. As a scholar, Aristotle had a wide range of interests. He wrote about meteorology, biology, physics, poetry, logic, rhetoric, and politics and ethics, among other subjects. His writings on many of these interests remained definitive for almost two millennia. They remained, and remain, so valuable in part because of the comprehensiveness of his efforts. For example, in order to understand political phenomena, he had his students collect information on the political organization and history of 158 different cities. The Politics makes frequent reference to political events and institutions from many of these cities, drawing on his students' research. Aristotle's theories about the best ethical and political life are drawn from substantial amounts of empirical research. (The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy).…

Hardback. Condition: Good. His poetry sings of the beauty of the natural world and offers a vision of the paradise that the world could be, but it is also imbued with a deep and painful awareness of the dark abyss that it threatens to become. For Vrettakos, the poet has a role to play in this struggle to determine the fate of the world. He is the champion of light and truth, the high priest of beauty, whose duty it is to celebrate the world, proclaiming the cosmic message of love as that which cuts paths across the darkness. He knows only too well, however, that the poets voice, like Gods, is seldom heeded. Paperback. Condition: Fair. This new edition of The Politics provides students with an unusually lucid and accessible account of this complex, difficult and enormously influential work. It is based on Jonathan Barnes' revision of the renowned Jowett translation, and includes detailed note, a guide to further reading and a chronology of the principal events in Aristotle's life. In his introduction Stephen Everson tackles those problems most likely to hamper students in understanding The Politics. Aristotle's political theory is closely related to claims and types of explanations which he uses and justifies elsewhere in his works, and so one of Everson's main purposes is to show how Aristotle's arguments can best be grasped through an understanding of what he has to say in The Physics about nature and in the The Ethics about human flourishing.…
