Préface en japonais et en français. Le P. Arrivet, des Missions Etrangères, arriva au Japon en 1873. Il enseigna deux ans à l'école des langues étrangères de Tokyo, et à l'école secondaire. Il fut décoré en 1888 du ruban de la cinquième classe de l'Ordre du Soleil Levant par le gouvernement japonais (BME, p.452). Mors fortement frottés avec un petit manque de cuir sur le premier, dos passé.

Un volume in-16°, couverture éditeur rigide percaline marron, avec le titre en lettres dorées sur le 1er plat et sur le dos, en lettres dorées également, le nom de l'Auteur, le titre et le nom de l'Éditeur. L'ouvrage compte 324 pages. En guise de frontispice, on trouvera deux textes calligraphiés en japonais (dont une Préface de l'Auteur datée du 1er juillet 1887). Il s'agit là du premier vrai dictionnaire de poche avec des mots usuels. L'auteur (1846-1902) faisait partie de la Mission étrangère de Paris, dont le champ d'action principal était l'Asie. Après l'INDE , il passe dans la Mission JAPON en 1873. Il quitte la Mission en 1876 pour devenir professeur à TOKYO, où il meurt en 1902. Rappelons que les premières relations officielles entre la France et le Japon datent du Traité d'amitié traité de paix, d'amitié et de commerce en octobre 1858. Edition originale.
