A brilliant colorist and a masterful storyteller, Wtewael depicted mythological and religious scenes with equal ease. His biblical subjects astound by the depth of feeling he portrayed, while his imaginative mythologies brim with wit and humor, whether they depict swirling masses of gods and goddesses in conflict, in concord, or even in compromising situations. His pictures of Mars and Venus are so risqué that some were censored or hidden away-behind another picture, on a collector's bookshelf, or in the reserve of a great museum. A pillar of the Utrecht community, Wtewael was engaged in business, religion, and politics as well as art. He made many sophisticated variations of his own compositions, raising questions about his workshop practice, his drawings- examined here as a group for the first time since 1929-and the role of his son Peter. Beyond exploring Wtewael's amazingly refined paintings and drawings, this volume also sheds light on his life, his reputation, and the conflicted times - marked by iconoclasm and strife - in which he lived.
