Soft cover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A rare original copy of a collection of writings honoring James Weldon Johnson, famous writer and civil rights activist, after his death in 1938. Includes two inlaid photographs, pasted to pages along their top edges: one is a portrait of Johnson, and the other is a photo of J…ohnson reading "The Creation" to Mrs. Johnson and a group of students gathered in their living room on Fisk Campus. The book begins with an biographical sketch of Johnson and a timeline of his life. The rest of the book is comprised of 3 pieces written for "the Sunday evening program specially planned in [Johnson's] honor" on April 23rd, 1939 at Fisk University: (1) "An Appreciation of James Weldon Johnson" by Arthur D. The book is softcover with a stapled binding and is in Fair condition. There are stress lines in gutters on some pages, eminating from binding. The paper underneath the 2nd photo, and adjacent pages, are lightly foxed. Binding staples rusted. Previous price in pencil on corner of ffep. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Laws Relating To Sex Morality In New York City is a book written by Arthur Barnett Spingarn and published in 1916. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the laws and regulations governing sexual behavior and morality in New York City during the early 20th century. It covers a wide r…ange of topics related to sexuality, including prostitution, homosexuality, and pornography, and examines the legal and social attitudes towards these behaviors at the time. The book also includes a detailed analysis of the legal cases and court decisions that shaped the city's approach to sex morality, as well as a discussion of the various organizations and individuals working to promote or challenge these laws. Overall, Laws Relating To Sex Morality In New York City offers a fascinating glimpse into the complex and often contradictory attitudes towards sexuality in the early 20th century, and provides valuable historical context for contemporary debates on these issues. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Dust Jacket. First Edition; First Printing. Light tone, light wear. Solid hardcover.; English translation of massive anthology of African literature. "The present volume is a work of compilation. For this reason I consider it a duty to indicate exactly in the bibliography the date and place of… publication of the works upon which I have drawn. I have given these tales just as the missionaries and explorers brought them to Europe, and just as they are published. They are not always the most original versions nor the most faithful translation. It is much to be regretted that literary exactitude was not the only legitimate preoccupation of these distant travellers." - Foreword by the author. ; 378 pages.

Eight original octavo issues, comprising the first two years of publication, bound together in plain cloth with gilt spine title; original card wrappers bound in. Each issue 64pp; illus. A clean, tightly-bound volume, with the individual issues clean and unmarked; about Fine. Well-preserved run of this important W…est Coast literary journal, which collected the work of many writers on the left at a time when they were under fire from the House Un-American Activities Committee. Of singular importance is the first published appearance, in the Summer, 1953 issue, of Michael Wilson's screenplay for the suppressed classic Salt of the Earth, one of the truly great works in the pantheon of labor filmmaking and one of very few works of the period to portray Mexican-American workers in a positive light. The movie was produced in 1954, directed by Herbert Biberman, but effectively disappeared after all but a dozen theaters nationwide refused to screen it. The screenplay, published here, includes numerous still images from the as-yet unreleased film, with additional brief essays by Biberman, Paul Jarrico (the producer), and Rosaura Revueltas, who starred as "Esperanza." Other contributors to these eight issues include a host of mid-century radical and experimental writers, including Edwin Rolfe, Aimé Césaire, Thomas McGrath, B. Traven, Pablo Neruda, Eve Merriam, John Oliver Killens (a very early appearance, in the Spring 1952 issue), Philip Bonosky, Nelson Algren, and many others. For the first few issues Lawrence Spingarn was listed as Editor in Chief, but by Spring, 1951 Sanora Babb had taken over most editorial duties.
