A fascinating, and very scarce, historical item, illustrating the trade and commerce of the time. James Henry Ashdown (1844-1924) was known as the 'Merchant Prince of Winnipeg', having arrived in that city in 1868 to begin business as a tinsmith. In 1870 he purchased two lots on the corner of Main Street and Bannatyne Ave., where Ashdown's maintained a retail store for over 100 years. He developed and operated both successful retail and wholesale operations throughout Western Canada and, in 1907, was elected Mayor of Winnipeg. Throughout the years Ashdown's Warehouse supplied every conceivable kind of merchandise, including its own 'Diamond A Brand' of goods, which are prominently featured in this catalogue.
