This volume describes 127 plants covering twenty one botanical families maintaining the same pattern of presentation as in previous volumes. In order that the readers may be conversant with the Ayurvedic terminologies the chapter on the Basic concepts of Ayurveda has been retained also in the present volume. Index of pant species of volumes 1 3 have also been incorporated. Several plants included in this volume are well known sources of herbal drugs and drug intermediates. Soft cover. Condition: Fine. From the preface The treatise on Indian Medicinal Plants is a compilation of the literature of seven hundred botanical species in six volumes. In five of the six volumes the literature of five hundred and ninety five dicotyledonous plants which are well known sources of herbal drugs and drug intermediates have been covered. Several chemical constituents occurring in these plants find extensive application in modern medicine. Surprisingly their synthetic substitutes are still not available. To cite with may be mentioned the anticancer drugs vincristine and vinblastine bis indole alkaloids encountered in the leaves of Catharanthus roseus G. Don the antiarrythmic drug quinidine from Cinchona ledgeriana L the cardiotonic glycosides digoxin and digitoxin from Digitalis lanata Enrh and Digitalis purpurea L. These glycosides a are specific drugs for congestive heart failure atrial fibrillation and increase in myocardial efficiency. 403 pp.
