In five of the six volumes the literature of five hundred and ninety five dicotyledonous plants which are well known sources of herbal drugs and drug intermed…iates have been covered. Several chemical constituents occurring in these plants find extensive application in modern medicine. Surprisingly their synthetic substitutes are still not available. To cite with may be mentioned the anticancer drugs vincristine and vinblastine bis indole alkaloids encountered in the leaves of Catharanthus roseus G. Don the antiarrythmic drug quinidine from Cinchona ledgeriana L the cardiotonic glycosides digoxin and digitoxin from Digitalis lanata Enrh and Digitalis purpurea L. These glycosides a are specific drugs for congestive heart failure atrial fibrillation and increase in myocardial efficiency. 403 pp.
