At age eighty Roy Anderson, living in the Appalachian hills of southwestern Virginia, tells the story of his life as a small farmer, from birth to the present day. Roy's voice can be listened to on the CD that is included at the back of the book, telling with delightful articulation and detail the story of his life spanning nearly a century. It is fascinating reading and listening. The Photographs of Diane Asseo Griliches are seen throughout the book and give the reader a good idea of what he and his world look like. In contrast to the generally negative view of Appalachia by writers and photographers, this book shows a resourceful though poor farmer, who has been a talented cabinetmaker, dulcimer and clock maker, greenhouse builder, and lay preacher, besides being a most experienced farmer. It is a delight to read and one learns much from it. The younger generation can absorb the atmosphere of how things were done in the past, and how a remarkable though poor man managed with his inventive intellectual resources, and a strong will to survive and have pleasure in his life. ; Oblong 8vo 8" to 9" tall; 124 pp.
