It was written in the early 1930s, and reflects an England between two world wars. Originally published by Jonathan Cape, this is the undated Children's Book Club edition. The Children's Book Club, located at 121 Charing Cross Road, London, was a prominent book subscription service run by the famous Foyles bookshop. Illustrations and endpapers are by Harold Jones. Previous owner's signature to the fly leaf but otherwise this is an unmarked copy, still tightly bound. Slightly grubby boards commensurate with age, and there is no dust jacket. More photographs available on request. Please note that if ordering from abroad, any customs charge will be the responsibility of the buyer. All proceeds of sale go to LOROS, a Hospice Charity serving Leicestershire and Rutland.

The boards have one inch patches of fading at the top and bottom of the spine where the jacket has been damaged and there is also some fading at the corners of the front panel and bumping to the corners. The top edges of the pages are browned with dark spotting and there is a little spotting to the bottom edges. but otherwise clean and unmarked. Brown spotting to the pages at the front and back of the book and there is light spotting in some places through the book but the pages are generally unmarked. The jacket is in two pieces, separated along the left edge of spine which has one inch pieces missing at the top and bottom and a tear across the centre. Chipping with some loss to the corners with tearing along the edges of the flaps. The spine is browned and there is brown spotting to the rear panel and the front and rear flaps - the front panel has only one small brown spot near the top however. Jacket and interior illustrations by Harold Jones.
