Thomas Meighan (1879-1936)American actor of silent films and early talkies. He played several leading man roles opposite popular actresses of the day, including Mary Pickford and Gloria Swanson. At one point he commanded $10,000 a week. He made four talkies until illness sidelined him in 1934. Worldcat locates two holdings in North America. Glavlit 93003. This copy fine.

Von Stroheim (1885-1957) was a giant among early film makers, a film star and avant garde, visionary director of the silent era. His masterpiece adaptation of Frank Norris's McTeague titled Greed is considered one of the finest and most important films ever made. After clashes with Hollywood studio bosses over budget and workers' rights issues, Stroheim was banned for life as a director and subsequently became a well-respected character actor, particularly in French cinema. For his early innovations as a director, Stroheim is still celebrated as one of the first of the auteur directors. Five North American holdings institutional holdings. Glavlit 78736. This copy fine.
