Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 760 pages. Published in 1993. Definitive collection of writings for opera and drama. One of the greatest literary achievements by Wystan Hugh Auden and his collaborator, Chester Kallman. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only and as part of The Complete Works of W. H. Auden by Princeton University Press. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents W. H. Auden's and Chester Kallman's "Libretti And Other Dramatic Writings". The prodigious and enduring contribution to the performing arts by two literary giants. "Opera gave him the opportunity to rise to the High Style, not in an attempt to elevate his own status, but in service of the heroic voices of the singers. The works present their actions with an intensity unlike anything in even his greatest poems" (Publisher's blurb). Among many gems, a few stand out: Auden's and Kallman's "The Rake's Progress" for Igor Stravinsky; their libretti for Hans Werner Henze's "Elegy For Young Lovers" and "The Bassarids"; and their celebrated translation of "The Magic Flute" and adaptation of "Love's Labour Lost". Possessing a more natural gift for the theater, Chester Kallman became Auden's full-fledged co-creator (and lover), writing complete parts while working with Auden on the poet's assignments. Their masterpiece, "The Rake's Progress", is recounted by Robert Craft, Stravinsky's collaborator, as having been a seamless joint venture. On the vintage bookplate this copy comes with is handwritten evidence that HE, not Auden, wrote the tender, moving farewell of Baba The Bearded Lady from "The Rake's Progress: "I shall go back and grace the stage / where manner rules and wealth attends / Can I deny my time its rage? / My self-indulgent intermezzo ends. Chester Kallman". An absolute "must-have" title for W. H. Auden and Chester Kallman collectors. This title is a great book. Laid-in is a 5 X 3 inch vintage bookplate on which Chester Kallman wrote in blue ink-pen the parting words of Baba The Bearded Lady from "The Rake's Progress", demonstrating his full-fledged collaboration on the masterly libretto of Stravinsky's only opera. As far as we know, this is the only copy (with Signed And Lined Bookplate) of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Chester Kallman, who died in 1975, signed the vintage bookplate, NOT the book. A rare set thus. 1 signed and lined vintage postcard. Two of the greatest literary artists of the 20th century. A fine collectible set. ISBN 0691033013. Signed by Author.

Henry Moore (illustrator). DESCRIPTION: No. XXXII of CL copies of the "A" edition printed and bound in red linen cloth for Europe. Another 150 copies were bound in green linen cloth ("B" edition) for the Americas. Folio size 16 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches which includes 13 poems and 21 lithographs by Henry Moore. The type was set and printed in Times Roman at the University Press, Oxford, by Vivian Ridler, Printer to the University. The Hodgkinson paper was made with the watermarks of the artist, the poet and the press by St. Cuthbert's Mill in Wells. The book was bound by Rudolf Rieser of Oberelvenich, Germany in red linen with black titling embossed in script on front cover. Separate portfolio (stiff chemise) bound with the same red linen cloth containing four additional loose lithographs by Moore. All contained in a black cloth-covered clamshell box. Book and each of the four additional loose lithographs are signed and numbered by the artist Henry Moore.____CONDITION: The book and chemise with four additional lithographs are in very fine condition. The black clamshell box has several areas of slight fading and minor rubbing on the rear panel, but all edges and corners are sharp and intact. NOTE: The round white 'spots' on the black clamshell box are photo artifact.____DISCUSSION: The Petersburg Press is a noted private press publisher of important livre d'artiste books and limited edition prints. They have worked with many of the most significant European and American Post War and Pop artists of their generation. Henry Moore was one of the most important and celebrated British artists, best known for his monumental semi-abstract bronze sculptures, usually a reclining figure. This livre d'artiste edition is an especially successful one, with Moore's lithographs dominating the pages, setting off and complementing Auden's complex verses. Moore dedicated his work to the poet's memory on hearing of his death in Austria on 29 September 1973._____ NOTE: This is an extremely large and heavy book which will incur an additional shipping charge domestically. International shipping cost with USPS International Priority EXPRESS Mail shipping with tracking to the United Kingdom and Europe is $125 U.S. dollars. Shipping cost to more distant locations may incur additional cost. Please read my comments regarding USPS international shipping and tracking in my AbeBooks storefront.
