Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Original German Bombing Report Protocol on Damages Caused by RAF Attack August 1940. "Fliegerangriff in der Nacht vom 17./18.8.40 auf die Hydrierwerk Scholven A.G." Mimeographed Report, 27 original photos. Size: 11.5 x 8.5 inches. 20 leaves with 27 original photographic images of damage caused by… the bombing. Each leave is quite thick much more stiff and heavy than a 110-lb cover stock sheet. The photos are all 3 x 4.5 inches, and are clear and bright. Condition: fine. [++] Provenance, U.S. Library of Congress. "The war-critical factories in Scholven and Horst were under Allied air attack as early as May 1940 , and air raids intensified in the summer of 1944. Towards the end of the Second World War, both plants had been almost completely destroyed by more than 5,000 bombs"--Wikipedia [++] This report details of damage caused by R.A.F. attack on the night of 17/18 August 1940. This was a few weeks before the beginning of the Battle of Britain, and another few weeks before the first German bombs began to fall on central London (August 24/5). [++] This is a fairly sumptuous production, hardcover, with original photographs pasted in, and of course with comments about the damage and debris of the raid. [++] Hydrierwerk Scholven A.G. was a synthetic petroleum plant and was one of the earliest targets of the British in the Ruhr Valley. It was established in 1935 by the Mining Company Hibernia A.G. and by then became a subsidiary of the giant I.G. Farben, and was located in Gelsenkirchen, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, in the northern part of the Ruhr area, in the far-western/central part of Germany. Hdydrierwerk Scholven employed 4-5,000 slave laborers, exploited in production of the synthetic fuel; these poor people may have been supplied via the KZ Buchenwald sub-camp Gelsenberg Lager, located in Gelsenkirchen. During the later course of the war about 75% of the city was destroyed in the campaigns from 1943-1945.[++] The war-critical factories in Scholven and Horst were under Allied air attack as early as May 1940 , and air raids intensified in the summer of 1944. Towards the end of the Second World War, both plants had been almost completely destroyed by more than 5,000 bombs [++]There is no indication of author/printer or which agency/department was responsible, but this looks like (to me) to be the beginning of a standard protocol on reporting damage from bombing raids. It seems as though the typing under the captions is first generation, original. [++] Notes: "Gelsenkirchen in the time of the Third Reich. In the time when the Nazis held sway in Germany, Gelsenkirchen, owing to its location in the heart of the Ruhr area, was a centre of wartime industry. In no other time has Gelsenkirchen's industry been so highly productive. This brought about, on the one hand, after the massive job cuts in the 1920s, a short-term boost in mining and heavy-industry jobs. On the other hand, the city naturally became the target of many heavy Allied bombing raids during the Second World War, which destroyed three fourths of Gelsenkirchen. Even today, many old above-ground air-raid shelters can be found in the city, and some of the city's official buildings such as Hans-Sachs-Haus downtown and the town hall in Buer have air-raid shelters still kept more or less in their original form. Two synagogues in Gelsenkirchen were destroyed in the anti-Jewish riots of Kristallnacht in November 1938. The one in Buer was burnt down. The one in downtown Gelsenkirchen was likewise destroyed. Exactly 66 years later, the cornerstone was laid there for a new synagogue. The Institute for City History set up a documentation site: "Gelsenkirchen in National Socialist times". Throughout the time when Hitler was in power, from 1933 to 1945, the city's mayor was Carl Engelbert Böhmer, an NSDAP member."--Wikipedia.

On February 27, 1933 at approximately 9:00 P.M. pedestrians near the Reichstag (the German Parliament building) heard the sound of breaking glass. Soon af…ter, flames erupted from the building. It took hours to quell the fire, which destroyed the debating chamber and the Reichstag's gilded cupola. Police arrested an unemployed Dutch construction worker, Marinus van der Lubbe, who was outside the building, panting, sweaty and with firelighters in his possession. A few hours later, on February 28, Hindenburg invoked Article 48 and the cabinet drew up the "Decree of the Reich President for the Protection of the People and State." The act abolished freedom of speech, assembly, privacy and the press; legalized phone tapping and interception of correspondence; and suspended the autonomy of federated states, like Bavaria. That night around 4,000 people were arrested, imprisoned and tortured by the SA. Five days earlier, on February 22, Hitler had used his powers as chancellor to enroll 50,000 Nazi SA men (aka storm troopers) as auxiliary police. Although the Communist party had won 17 percent of the Reichstag elections in November 1932, and the German people elected 81 Communist deputies in the March 5 elections, many were detained indefinitely after the fire. Their empty seats left the Nazis largely free to do as they wished. Later that year, a sensational criminal trial got under way. The accused included van der Lubbe, Ernst Torgler (leader of the Communist Party in the Reichstag) and three Bulgarian Communists. As the trial in Germany proceeded, Willi Münzenberg, a German Communist, together with other Communists, undertook their own investigation of the fire. The research resulted in the publication of The Brown Book on the Reichstag Fire and Hitler Terror. It included early accounts of Nazi brutality, argued that van der Lubbe was a pawn of the Nazis, and that the Nazis orchestrated the fire to consolidate political power. The book became a bestseller, translated into 24 languages. Wilhelm "Willi" Münzenberg was a German Communist, political activist and publisher. He was the first head of the Young Communist International in 1919-20, established the famine-relief and propaganda organization Workers International Relief in 1921, was a leading propagandist for the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) during the Weimar Era, but later grew disenchanted with the USSR because of Joseph Stalin's Great Purge of the 1930s. After Stalin wanted him arrested for treason, he left the KPD and in Paris became a leader of the German émigré anti-fascism and anti-Stalinist community until forced to flee the Nazi advance into France in 1940. Arrested and imprisoned by the Daladier government in France, he escaped prison camp. A few months later his remains were found in a forest near the commune of Saint-Marcellin, France. The circumstances pointed to murder but it is unclear whether the killers were the Russians or the Germans. Both wanted him dead.
