Holmes's celebrated collection of conversational essays, poetry, wit, and social commentary, first published serially in The Atlantic Monthly during 1857 and 1858. Set around the breakfast table of a Boston boarding house, the work combines humor, philosophical reflection, and observations of nineteenth-century American society.
