Softcover. Condition: Near Fine. First edition. Trade paperback original. Some light rubbing along the edges of the spine, else very near fine. Very scarce pseudonymous novel, a mystery about a corrupt baseball player and a hardboiled private eye. Laid into the book is a warm Autograph Letter Signed from Auster to poet Clark Coolidge, mentioning that their recent meeting was ". a great encounter for me in the Berkshires - and I hope we will stay in touch." He mentions sending along some books, apologizing and suggesting that they are "for you to look at or not, as you see fit." In a postscript, Auster refers to this book: "One little suggestion, however. Read the detective story first - if at all - and disregard the ugliness of the book. It's going to be reprinted by Avon and should look much much better. The poems and the blue book are what I care about most." The letter is folded and with a little age-toning at one edge, else about fine. The true first edition of this pseudonymous novel is exceptionally uncommon.
