Robert Capa ist einer der berühmtesten Fotografen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Bekannt wurde…er vor allem als Kriegsreporter. Wie kein anderer vermochte er dem Schrecken des Krieges und dem Leid der Zivilbevölkerung in der Fotografie Ausdruck zu verleihen. Er fing mit seiner Kamera unter anderem den Spanischen Bürgerkrieg (1936-1939), die Landung der Alliierten in der Normandie (1944), Berlin 1945, den ersten israelisch-arabischen Krieg (1948) und schließlich den Krieg in Indochina ein. In Indochina wurde er im Mai 1954 von einer Mine getötet. Er wurde vierzig Jahre alt. Seine ersten Bilder entstanden im Auftrag der Berliner Zeitschrift Weltspiegel in den dreißiger Jahren. Dieses Buch präsentiert nicht nur die berühmten Ikonen des Kriegsfotografen Capa wie die legendäre Aufnahme des tödlich getroffenen spanischen Freiheitskämpfers, sondern auch unbekannte, zum Teil unveröffentlichte Fotografien, etwa von der Tour de France von 1939. Zahlreiche Künstlerporträts, unter anderem von Pablo Picasso, komplettieren das Bild eines überraschend vielfältigen, stets von einem tiefen Humanismus getragenen Werks.
