Felix Azara realizo el Diario de reconocimiento de guardias y fortines que guarnecian la linea de frontera de Buenos Aires a pedido de Melo de Portugal, con quien habia mantenido una buena relacion durante su larga estancia en el Paraguay cuando este era por entonces su gobernador.La maxima…autoridad del virreinato del Rio de la Plata, por medio del oficio del 29 de Febrero de 1796, exponia los motivos de la mision y las plazas que componian la expedicion: .procedase a hacer un prolijo reconocimiento de toda la frontera y sitios mas adecuados a fundar las poblaciones segun lo mandado por Su Majestad, a cuyo fin comisiono, con todas las facultades respectivas, al Capitan de Navio de la Real Armada, don Felix de Azara, en calidad de Comandante General de esta expedicion.Concretamente, la expedicion duro desde el 17 de marzo al 24 de abril de 1796, o sea, cuarenta y cuatro dias, e hizo el periplo siguiente: Buenos Aires (puente de Marquez, San Isidro), Guardia de Lujan-Fortin de Areco, Guardia de Salto-Fuerte de Rojas-Fortin de Mercedes (Cabeza de Tigre, Santa Fe), Fortin de Melincue (Santa Fe) y de alli durante dieciocho dias siguiendo casi siempre la linea del rio Salado hasta la Guarda de Chascomus para seguir el derrotero hasta la Guardua de Ranchos-Guardia del Monte Fortin de Lobos y por ultimo el Fortin Navarro.En el Diario de reconocimiento de guardias y fortines Azara senalaba que la politica en relacion a la frontera debia ir de la mano de una politica de poblamiento para que de esa manera, con una eficaz defensa de los aborigenes de la region, fuera aprovechable la riqueza de la campana, la proteccion de las haciendas y de la capital del virreinato rioplatense.
