Molecular epidemiology has found many domains of application, in particular cancer epidemiology, environmental epidemiology and inf…ectious disease epidemiology. During the last two decades, molecular epidemiology has become an important discipline in cancer research. The early contributions of molecular epidemiology came from the application of markers of exposure, such as measurements of adducts in blood and urine, in population-based studies. The investigation of aflatoxin exposure markers in cohorts at high risk of liver cancer remains a paradigm of the potential of the new approaches. Over the years, molecular cancer epidemiology has evolved towards the development, validation and application of markers of susceptibility and, more recently, markers of mechanisms of cancer development. This IARC Scientific Publication originates from the workshop 'Mechanistic Considerations in the Molecular Epidemiology of Cancer' jointly organised by IARC and the University of Vermont and held in Lyon, France, in November 2001. The workshop was devoted to providing guidelines for use of molecular techniques in cancer epidemiology, in particular with respect to the study of cancer mechanisms. Molecular cancer epidemiology is often defined in terms of biomarkers, which are found internally within biological systems as indicators of exposure, effects, or susceptibility is no longer necessary. For example, DNA adducts are markers that integrate exposure, effect and susceptibility. This category of agents is diverse and includes chemicals and chemical mixtures; occupation…s; metals, dusts, and fibres; radiation; viruses and other biological agents; personal habits; and pharmaceuticals. For the Group 1 agents, there were cross-cutting questions about the relevance to humans of certain cancer sites or mechanistic pathways in animals. This publication is based on a systematic identification and comparison of the cancer sites observed in humans and those observed in experimental animals, and a compilation of mechanistic events for agents known to cause cancer in humans. Relevant information was analysed on all the agents classified in Group 1 in Monographs up to and including Volume 109, most of which are reviewed in Volume 100A-F. A database of tumour sites seen in humans and animals was used to examine the degree of concordance by use of an anatomically based tumour classification scheme. The analysis of mechanistic aspects of the IARC Group 1 agents focused on 10 key characteristics of human carcinogens developed during the course of this work. Genotoxicity was the most prevalent mechanistic characteristic, consistent with the process of carcinogenesis necessarily involving genomic changes. The IARC concordance database represents a useful source of information for comparing animal and human data with respect to the tumours caused in different species. The results of the mechanistic analysis can provide a basis for future efforts to categorize mechanistic data for carcinogens through a systematic review process. These reviews and analyses were discussed during a two-part Workshop on Tumour Site Concordance and Mechanisms of Carcinogenesis convened by IARC. This Scientific Publication is the report of that Workshop and of subsequent work by the participants, both individually and collectively. This publication also presents a statement of consensus among the Workshop participants, which summarizes the main findings and their implications for human cancer risk assessment. Black and white photography, mixed with text and plans, illuminate the technical and constructional aspects of the museum. The recently opened Porsche Museum…in Zuffenhausen, at the entrance to the city of Stuttgart, is exceptional in three respects: for its architecture, its construction and its urban design. In its form, use of technology and dynamic elegance the design reflects the qualities of the traditional automobile brand. A 160 metre long exhibition element rests on three concrete cores, which enable the smooth structure to float with apparent ease above the level of the ground floor. Upon entering the building the visitor is drawn onto a sunken entrance plateau, effortlessly crossing the threshold between the everyday world and the white Porsche experience. The graphic design concept of Mevis and Van Deursen enables the reader of this book to share with the visitor the sense of moving through the museum. The photography of Iwan Baan guides him visually around and through the building. While the first part of the book relies on pure black and white photography the second part uses texts and plans to illuminate the technical and constructional aspects of the project. This is a book for anyone interested in the architecture of the Porsche Museum. At the same time it is in itself an object crafted according to the same principles. DMAA Delugan Meissl Associated Architects was founded in Vienna in 1993 by Elke Meissl and Roman Delugan. The office, which now has a team of 20, became DMAA Delugan Meissl Associated Architects in 2004 upon the naming of Dietmar Feistel, Martin Josst and Christopher Schweiger as partners. Professor HG Merz, established offices in Stuttgart in 1981 and Berlin in1993. He is an architect and museum designer and teaches experimental design at the Technical University of Darmstadt. Alongside museum and exhibition design he specialises in working with historic buildings. Liquid Frontiers, Vienna was founded in 2000 by Sabine Dreher and Christian Muhr. The Liquid Frontiers label operates as an independent platform for the creation of exhibitions and publications in the areas of art, architecture and design. Annette Bögle, born 1968, studied civil engineering. She worked as an engineer while holding a number of teaching posts. 200104 Curator of the exhibition "Leicht Weit Light Structures" in the German Architecture Museum in Frankfurt. 2004 Doctorate "Aspects of the Morphology of Complex Building Forms".
