Mit Werken von Künstlern, die außerhalb des Haarlemer Kreises wirkten, wie Bakker Korff, Van Brekelenkam, Pieter Codde, Aelbert Cuyp, Gerard David, Wybrand de Geest, Charles Hodges, Gerard van Honthorst, Nicolaes Maes, Michiel van Miereveit, Jan van Ravesteyn, Gerard Terborch, Johannes Verkolje, Jacob de Wit und anderen, wird auf bescheidene Weise die nationale Bedeutung dieser vorwiegend der Haarlemer Schule gewidmeten Sammlung unterstrichen, die durch das Genie eines Frans Hals internationalen Ruf erlangte. Das sich verändernde Kulturbild, das in Malerei und Architektur seinen Nie-derschlag gefunden hat, hat sich zugleich in alten Möbeln und Glasmalereien, in Silber, Kupfer und Zinn, in Porzellan, Glas und Keramik, in Münzen und Medaillen, Miniaturen und Silhouetten verkörpert. Dankbar wurde das alles zur Ausstattung und Verschönerung der historischen Räume, der stilgerecht möblierten Zimmer wie auch der alten Apotheke verwendet. In diesem harmonischen Ganzen bildet das schon erwähnte Puppenhaus aus der Zeit um 1750 mit seinen mehr als 3000 Einzelstücken den glänzenden Abschluß und Höhepunkt. Als der verehrungswürdigste Teil der Sammlungen gilt die Kollektion Coste-riana. Sie stammt der Überlieferung nach teilweise noch aus der Buchdrucker-werkstatt von Lourens Coster, der schon um die Mitte des fünfzehnten Jahrhunderts in Haarlem mit beweglichen, gegossenen Metallettern gearbeitet hat. Einzigartig vertreten ist das Werk von Frans Hals, dessen Spannweite man sich erst bewußt wird, wenn man bedenkt, daß die fünf Schützen- und die drei Regenten-Stücke zusammen nicht weniger als 84 Einzelporträts (und das eines Hundes!) in sich vereinen. Höhepunkt dieses Zyklus sind die Bildnisse der Regenten und Regentessen des Altmännerheimes von 1664, die zu den hervorragendsten Schöpfungen der Kunstgeschichte gehören. Das vorliegende Büchlein kann als eine möglichst sorgfältig zusammengestellte Auslese aus dem reichen Bestand des Museums angesehen werden, wobei der Nachdruck auf Arbeiten aus dem siebzehnten Jahrhundert und dessen Höhepunkt gelegt wurde, sowie auf die umfassende Sammlung, mit der das Lebenswerk von Frans Hals hier vertreten ist. Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt. - Das Frans Halsmuseum hat seine Wiege an dem Geburtsort von Haarlem selbst gehabt: in dem aus dem Mittelalter stammenden Rathaus am Großen Markt. Die jetzt im Museum versammelten Kunstschätze waren zu einem Teil schon vor 1862 in Haarlem, aber zerstreut in einer Anzahl von historischen Gebäuden : dem Rathaus, der St. Bavokirche, dem Waisenhaus, dem Männer-Altersheim, den Häusern der Schützeugcsellschaften usw. Im Jahre 1860 faßte man den Beschluß, im Rathaus zwei Säle bereitzustellen, in denen alles, was die zerstreuten Gruppenporträts von Frans Hals betraf, ausgestellt werden sollte. Diese Räume wurden am 1. Juli 1862 für das Publikum freigegeben. Neuerwerbungen förderten das Wachstum der Sammlung, vor allem die der Einrichtungsstücke des Männer-Altersheimes (1866). Im Jahre 1883 bereicherte der Freiherr G.C.W. Fabricius van Leyenburg das Museum mit seiner fürstlichen Schenkung, die dann in einem besonderen Saal untergebracht wurde. Eine Anzahl von Gönnern und Gönnerinnen machte dem Museum Stiftungen und Geschenke, so daß man sich nach einer geräumigeren Unterkunft umsehen mußte. Diese fand man schließlich an der Groot-Heiligland-Straße in dem heutigen Museums-Komplex, dessen historischer Kern ein Teil des 1608 gestifteten und wahrscheinlich von Lieven de Key erbauten Männer-Altersheimes ist. Seit 1913 haben die Haarlemschen Sammlungen in dieser ungewöhnlich reizvollen Umgebung ihren endgültigen Platz gefunden. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550 Mit zahlr. farb. Abb.
