Lacking map 25, (Bull's Bay) but with an additional folding Map of the Mouth of the Columbia River, the last map not mentioned in the contents. Single maps are s…elling for in excess of £100 online. Bound with titles in gilt to the front board, the spine strip missing, but the volume intact. Approximately 11 ¾ inches tall to the boards. Map dimensions are all approximate. Condition Report Externally Spine poor condition lacking the original spine, revealing the white binding beneath, structurally sound. Joints poor condition sound, rubbed. Corners good condition bumped and worn, with loss. Boards good condition front board with gilt titles both boards with blind stamped decoration. Page edges good condition slightly darkened. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition sound but loose. Paste downs good condition bookplate for the University of London, notes in pencil. End papers good condition tanned and foxed. Title good condition tanned and foxed. Pages good condition tanned with some foxing, some closed tears to the folds and joins with the volume. Binding good condition worn and rubbed. See photos. Photographic facsimile ma…p and chart (MC), 9 panel fold, adhered to backing board, framed under glass, double matted, features nautical region (NR) chart of the San Francisco (SF) Bay, faint foxing of NW NR, SF illustrated in hand coloured detail; streets, wharves, reservoirs, buildings (various locations identified; e.g. Portsmouth Square), hardware fastened at rear with (2) bumpers at bottom corners. Vodges, No. 627 appears atop border of 1853 first edition, absent from this state. Per the Annual Report of the Survey for 1853, the state of the MC reflects characteristics as issued and published (litho) with the addition of more notes regarding tides (upper left) and issued, engraved on thin paper, as noted in the collection of charts published by the survey in 1854. (p. 253) Not examined outside of frame. Very good. Measures: 27 x 35.75 x 1 overall, 19 x 27 sight, 18.75 x 26.5 MC, inches. Scale 1: 10,000. "A.D. (Alexander Dallas) Bache was a great grandson of Benjamin Franklin. Bach joined the U.S. Coast Survey in 1843. Bache was best known for his outstanding administrative abilities and remarkable vision; e.g. He assigned his Coast Survey topographers and hydrographers to the Union Army and Navy and increased four-fold the production of maps and charts." (ASCE).
