Moderate toning and light foxing to card; moderate yellowing to photo. This shot depicts a secluded hot springs along Castle Creek in Yavapai County, Arizona. There are boards and rocks positioned to help pool the spring. German-born photographer Erwin Baer worked out of Prescott from the early 1880s to 1910s, where he was primarily known as a mine photographer.

This photo depicts four or five men hydraulic mining in Lynx Creek, Arizona. Hydraulic mining dramatically increased the effectiveness placer mining, and in this image you can see why. Pressurized water jets from a nozzle and four men work the large sluices. Long pipes, carrying water to the mining site, can be seen on the hillside above where the miners are working. Hydraulic mining in Lynx Creek began in 1868 and continued to be successful enterprise into the 1890s. Boudoir Card. Condition: Very Good. Boudoir card depicting the Santa Fe, Prescott and Phoenix Railway near Prescott, Arizona. Erwin Baer photograph on Hamaker card. "S. F. P. & P. R.R. - No. 12 Point of Rocks, Baer, Prescott, Arizona" is in the negative; handwritten title is on the card and on the photo; "Hamaker, Prescott, Arizona" is embossed on the card. No content on verso. Photo measures 7 ½" x 4 ½"; card measures 8 ¼" x 5". No date but likely late 19th/early 20th century. Card has moderate soiling and light wear to edges; photo has light soiling. A rare shot of where the Santa Fe, Prescott and Phoenix Railway cut through a tall, unique rock formation called "Point of Rocks." The Railway extended the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway from Ash Fork to Phoenix, Arizona. German-born photographer Erwin Baer worked out of Prescott from the early 1880s to 1910s, where he was primarily known for mining and railroad scenes. H. Hamker, whose name is embossed on the card, collaborated with Baer in Prescott (Mautz p. 53). With good composition and clarity this would be a nice acquisition for those collecting railroad or territorial Arizona material.

This photo is part of a set "Grand Canyon of the Colorado, Cataract Route, Via Ash Fork, Arizona." Havasu Canyon was then known as Cataract Canyon, and could be accessed by rail transport to Ash Fork. The image depicts five riders on horseback in front of a rock feature captioned as Mt Observation, or Huethawalee, presumably the current Mount Huethawali on the Esplanade. No date for this image, but most likely early 1900s. Some light wear to the card, 10" x 8" mount with 8 7/8" x 6 3/4" photo is clean with wonderful contrast and very little soiling. ; 8" x 10"; 1 pp.

Unbound. Condition: Very Good. Gelatin silver boudoir photograph mounted on a thick card imprinted on the verso with the name of photographer Erwin Baer and a list of 10 "Views in Arizona" (this one not listed among them). Image size approximately 8" x 5". Tiny stain in bottom corner of mount with almost no effect on the image, a damp mark on the verso, and a few tiny foxed spots on the sky portion of the landscape, very good. Captioned in ink in a contemporary hand on verso: "Whipple Barracks, Arizona in 1892 - Thumb Butte on left." The image taken from an overlook, shows a frontier fort, with several barracks, central buildings, parade grounds, officer's quarters, stables, pasture, and cultivated crops. Presumably a scarce image. *OCLC* appears not to find anything from the "Views in Arizona" series.
