Très influencé par la mystique rhénane et l'influence carmélite espagnole, l'ouvrage sera mis à l'Index en 1689, sous l'accusation générale de "quiétisme". Très rare impression de Cahors sortie des presses de Jean d'Alvy, le principal imprimeur de la ville à cette date, en concurrence avec Claude Rousseau, fils de Jacques qui le premier au XVIe siècle installa l'imprimerie à "Cahours" ou "Caors" (Bibliotheca Aureliana XXVI, p.43 mentionne un premier imprimé en 1549 chez Estienne Boesce).Édition originale. Première partie seule publiée de l'histoire établie par le Père Jésuite Jean Jérôme Baiole (1588-1653) natif de Condom qui entra au noviciat à l'âge de seize ans puis enseigna la philosophie et la théologie principalement à Périgueux où il mourut.Provenance : bibliothèque de Jean-Marie de Catellan (1696-1771), abbé de Narbonne, évêque de Rieux et ardent défenseur des Jésuites avec son ex-libris armorié ; note manuscrite ancienne en regard du titre, ex-libris manuscrit biffé 1665 sur le titre, ex-libris manuscrit à l'encre du temps Joannis Gremon sur la garde supérieure. Les 2 feuillets de la table des chapitres prévus en tête de volume (signature e, non paginés) sont reliés en fin d'exemplaire. Age related wear includes some browning of pages, occasional spotting, a little lower margin worming towards the end and a few tears neatly repaired; otherwise a very good crisp copy. Early library number on first free endpaper and ownership signature at foot of title. Illustrated by 2 wood engraved text figures and by title page vignette. Decorated by headpiece vignettes and by initials. Only the first part was ever published of this history of Christianity in Aquitaine published by Jean D'Alvy in Cahors. Jean-Jerome Baiole (1588-1653), native of Condom, was a Jesuit who taught philosophy and theology, principally in Perigueux. Please note that this copy of the scarce Cahors imprint lacks the 2A signature, but is otherwise complete. A very rare title, with no copies recorded in Britain by Library Hub.
