A majority of Latvian intellectuals fled the country after it fell to Soviet rule, resulting in a large, vibrant diaspora. The owner of Gramatu Dragus, Helm?rs Rudz?…tis, was among those refugees. He emigrated to the US in 1949 and two years later re-established Gramatu Dragus, where it became the pre-eminent Lativian publisher outside of Latvia.
