Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Limited Edition. DESCRIPTION: Limited edition, one of 400 copies. Quarto (4to) 10 1/4 x 6 3/4 inches, 26.7 x 17.5 cm, 624 pages. Three volumes (all same size): Tristram Shandy (book), softcover volume with 46 page essay by Sterne scholar Melvyn New entitled "Laurence Sterne and Tristram Shandy" and an… accordion volume of 39 photo-collage illustrations by conceptual artist John Baldessari framed by two green gilt-stamped boards. The type for the novel and essay is Monotype and handset Caslon Old Style, printed by letterpress on specially made Curtis Ruysdael paper. The photo-collage illustrations are paired with quotations from the novel which are printed by offset lithography in black and seven colors. The novel is bound in dark green calf for the spine and corners and green marbled paper over boards, with titling gilt-stamped on the spine. Book is protected with an archival clear Grafix Dura Lar dust wrapper. All three volumes are housed in a large slipcase covered with green paper with gilt-stamped titling on the spine. _____CONDITION: A few minor superficial scuffs at the foot of the book spine (note: scuffs are found on the green calf spine in every copy I have encountered) although MUCH fewer than normally seen. Calf spine is without the drying, rubbing and soiling this edition is notorious for. Book is otherwise in fine ("as new") condition, as are the softcover Melvyn New essay and the Baldessari accordion photo-collages. Slipcase is fine._____DISCUSSION: This is one of the most ambitious and inspired of the Andrew Hoyem Arion Press books. The essay by Melvyn New is scholarly and informative and the offbeat, wacky Baldessari photo-collages playfully capture the experimental and wacky nature of Laurence Sterne's groundbreaking novel. A perfect pairing of literature and illustrator._____NOTE: International shipping cost using USPS International Priority EXPRESS Mail with tracking to most locations in the United Kingdom and Europe is $75 U.S. dollars. Shipping cost to more distant locations may incur additional cost. Please see my comments regarding USPS international shipping and tracking in my AbeBooks storefront. John Baldessari (illustrator). Soft cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: None, As Issued. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. Unpaginated. Published in 1981. Artist Book. More important, it is one of the precursors of the modern photobook. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run of 3000 copies as a softcover original on…ly. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by John Baldessari: Regular-sized volume format. Plain softcovers with titles on the cover, as issued. Photographically-based Conceptual art by John Baldessari. Except for the titles, there is no text. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the exhibition, "John Baldessari: New Work", held at the CEPA Gallery Buffalo in 1981. The latter (and this accompanying volume) was part of FOUR BY THREE, four exhibitions and concurrent artist residencies by three artists, including Baldessari, sponsored by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, the CEPA Gallery, and The Hallwalls. Presents John Baldessari's "Close-Cropped Tales". Film stills reproduced as photographs, appropriated, and re-presented by the artist as progressively bizarre croppings. What he calls our attention to (because we typically ignore it) and finally matters are the borders rather than the images contained within: Three-Sided Tales (or a triangle), Four-Sided Tales (a square). And so on as things get bizarrely complicated: Five-Sided, Six-Sided, Seven-Sided, and Eight-Sided. Every film must be contained within the four sides of a square or rectangle, and whether it's at the theater, on TV, video disc, streaming platform, or cell phone. Baldessari's acute point is that only art, and not just the Conceptual kind, can subvert and transcend the unavoidable borders imposed by the moving image. Trust the angle, not the tale. An absolute "must-have" title for John Baldessari collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by John Baldessari. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary art and photography classic. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Edition/First Printing still available online and despite its imperfection (browning and slight wear on the softcovers) is still in fine condition overall: Every single page is clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Baldessari did NOT sign most copies of the book. Signed copies of any book by him are rare because he is an infrequent signer at best. A rare signed copy thus. 27 plates. One of the greatest artist/photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JOHN BALDESSARI TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). Signed by Author.

Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: New. Limited Edition. Main volume: octavo, 10 1/4" by 6 3/4", 624 pages. Essay: same size, 44 pages. Photo-collages, same size, 86 accordion-fold pages. The type is Caslon Old Style, the face used for the first printings of Sterne's original nine volumes (1760-1767), in Monotype composition by Mackenzie-Har…ris, with larger sizes handset. The paper is a special making of all-cotton Curtis Ruysdael. Tipped-in marbled paper was specially made. The binding of the main volume is machine-sewn, with a dark green calf spine and corners, mabled paper sides, and gold spine titling. The essay volume is identical in production except it is bond in green paper over boards, with gold titling on the front. The accordion-fold volume of photo-collages and excerpts was printed by offset lithography on Curtis Bridgewater Cover paper and has green paper-covered boards with gold titling on the front cover, and a piece of folded green paper covering the fore-edge. All three volumes are in a single slipcase, covered in green paper with spine titling in gold. An extra suite of five large-scale lithographic prints was printed in black and eight colors of inks. The paper is T.H. Saunders Waterford Hot Press paper, ranging in size within 22 by 30 inches. The suite is housed in a portfolio with a green cloth spine and green paper sides with a titling label on the front. Edition of 50 numbered sets, plus 15 hors de commerce, signed by the artist. With 39 photo-collage illustrations and an extra suite of five lithographs by John Baldessari, in three volumes, with prospectus. Laurence Sterne (1713-1768) was an obscure country parson when he self-published the first two volumes of this novel in 1760. When he died eight years later, he was rich and famous, and his book, unlike any other work of English fiction, had garnered extravagent praise and abundant censure. He acknowledged inspiration in the writings of Rabelais, Cervantes, and Montaigne, but "Tristram Shandy" was and remains an original, provocative, and hilariously funny book. The text was highly unusual in its typographic presentation, and Arion Press went out of its way to be faithful to the details of the setting, which include asterisks for naughty words, a marbled page, and a black page. Please note that while this set is new, the leather back of the main volume does show a few very light, stray marks. ___POSTAGE: Please note that this set is extremely large and heavy, and additional postage may apply; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. A set six of the avant-garde periodical Assembling. Instead of selecting from submissions presented to it, Richard Kostelanetz (and, at various times, Henry James Korn, Mike Metz, Scott Helmes, and David Cole) invited potential contributors to submit a thousand copies of whatever they wa…nted to include, which were then alphabetically assembled into 8.5 by 11 inch books. Published by Ghilbmessa Inc. (First number) and then by Assembling Press, New York between 1970-1981. Edition of 1000. Overall excellent, well-preserved copies with minor edge-wear and age-toning, some mildly bumped corners, oversized pages in some issues creased at fore-edges. Very Good or better with no major flaws, no internal markings - all in custom protective mylar. Notably - front panel of Issue 1, which is printed on lighter paper than subsequent issues, has small closed tears at the staples - loosely attached thus. Issue 4 has a closed, diagonal tear with creasing at the spine near bottom edge - not affecting binding. Please inquire for further, thorough descriptions of condition of individual issues. Issue 1 (1970) features mixed-media contributions from Edward Ruscha (Chocolate smear by the artist), Dan Graham, Bernadette Mayer, Vito Acconci, Madeline Gins, Arakawa, Hannah Weiner, Robert Lax et al. Second Assembling (1971) features the work of Jochen Gerz, Davi Det Hompson, Clemente Padin, Alan Sondheim and Nicholas Zurbrugg et al. Third Assembling (1972), which was collated and bound by an anonymous fireman and his family, includes contributions from artists such as John Baldessari, John Furnival, Roni Hoffman, Elizabet Ginsberg, Ruth Krauss and Joseph Phillips. Fourth Assembling (1973) contains work by: Jean-Jacques Cory, Wally Depew, Dick Higgins, Nancy Henderson, Mad Dog et al. Fifth Assembling (1975) features artistic contributions by Eric Anderson, Bruce Andrews, Scott Hyde, Shoichi Kiyokawa, Thomas Macauley, Jonathan Price and Karl Young among many others. Sixth Assembling features works by Bob Aab, Anna Banana, A.F. Caldiero, Robin Crozier, Veronica Drew, Bill Gaglione & Tim Mancusi, Joe Johnson etc. Seventh Assembling features contributions by, among others, Rene Aeberhard, Bruce Andrews and Eduardo Ballerini. Eighth Assembling (1978) was split into two (A-J) and (K-Z) and includes avant-garde contributions from artists such as Charlton Burgh, Charles Ewert, Michael Gibbs and Richard Grayson in the first, and Valery Oisteanu, Douglas Turnbaugh and Nancy Wolf in the second. Ninth Assembly (1979) constitutes a 'critical' anthology. Tenth Assembling features contributions by Allan Coleman, Bonnie Donohue, Rimma & Valery Gerlovin and Tom Persons. Eleventh Assembling (1981), subtitled "Pilot Proposals" includes contributions by Agnes Denes, Bern Porter and Richard Meltzer, among others. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Hardcover. One of four hundred copies. This is an adventuresome and inventive offering by the famed Arion Press. It is the 26th publication of the Press and is presented to the reader in three volumes. The first volume contains the complete text of the novel. The second volume is an essay of 42 p…ages by Sterne scholar Dr. Melvyn New of the University of Florida. Dr. New discusses Sterne's life and elucidates the complexities of Tristram Shandy for the first-time readers as well for those familiar with the book. The third volume is bound as an accordion fold and contains 39 photo-collages by the artist John Baldessari and each copy is signed by him. Baldessari (1931-2020) was an American conceptual artist known for his work featuring found photography and appropriated images. Initially a painter, Baldessari began to incorporate texts and photography into his canvases in the mid-1960s. In 1970 he began working in printmaking, film, video, installation, sculpture and photography.e created thousands of works which demonstrate-and, in many cases, combine-the narrative potential of images and the associative power of language within the boundaries of the work of art. [Wikipedia] Volume I with the text is bound with threee quarter green leather with green and white marbled paper boards. The paper was marbled by hand by Eileen Canning of Dancing Inks in Olympia, Washington, who used a style reminiscent of the marbling done for the first edition in 1760 - 1767. Printed on all-cotton Curtis Ruysdael paper using Caslon Old Style type for the text. It is 620 pages. The second and third volumes are bound in green Curtis Brightwater Cover. All three volumes are unified by a 6.75 x 10.25 inches format and are contained in a single slipcase covered in green cloth with gilt titling to spine. Near fine with wear and sunning to the spine of Volume I. The two other volumes are in fine condition. Slipcase is fine overall with light sunning to spine. Accompanied by the prospectus. Kein Einband. Condition: Sehr gut. John Baldessari : Signed Exhibition Poster*** Size: 59 x 97 cm *** Hand-signed in white ink by the artist in the lower right corner of the image *** This rare and visually striking exhibition poster was created for the solo show of legendary American conceptual artist John Baldessari at the Kes…tner Gesellschaft in Hannover, held from December 9, 1988 to January 29, 1989 *** The poster features Baldessaris signature visual language, combining found imagery, abstraction, and humor. On the left, a monochrome photograph of a shirtless man with his eyes obscured by white dots is paired with a classical sculpture on the right. The bold yellow shape across the torso and the juxtaposition of modern and ancient forms exemplify Baldessaris ongoing exploration of visual communication and the boundaries of meaning in art *** A rare collectors item that captures Baldessaris distinctive style and conceptual wit *** A unique opportunity to own a signed original from one of the most influential artists of post-war contemporary art *** John Baldessari (1931 2020) was a pioneering American conceptual artist known for blending photography, text, and painting to challenge traditional art narratives. His work, often humorous and provocative, redefined visual storytelling by incorporating found imagery, bold colors, and strategic text overlays * Baldessari's work operates at the intersection of pre-existing imagery and personal interpretation, highlighting the role of mass media in shaping visual perception and structuring collective imagination. By utilizing found images and reframing them within new contexts, he exposes the ways in which visual culture dictates reality, influencing how we perceive confrontation, deadlock, and impasse *** SHIPPING: Worldwide shipping available *** CONDITION: in very good condition ***. JOHN BALDESSARI - Signed & Numbered Photograph " Stuck on a Bridge " - 1966 - very nice framed ** Gelatine silver print (B/W photograph). Hand-signed and numbered along the edge by John Baldessari. Limited edition of 120. Publisher : Texte zur Kunst, Berlin. Pro…fessionally very nice framed. Elevated, in measure-made thick passe-partout. Handmade bespoke black wooden frame. Framed approx. 50 x 70 cm. ** Two trucks stand head-to-head on a narrow bridge, locked in a duel with no way forward. A work by California-based conceptual artist John Baldessari plays with the tension of an unresolved narrative. The title suggests a story that the image itself does not reveal, leaving the viewer to complete the scene in their imagination. Frozen in time, the photograph resembles a film still, yet it functions as a "Still Film", unfolding in the viewer's mind. * John Baldessari (1931 2020) was a pioneering American conceptual artist known for blending photography, text, and painting to challenge traditional art narratives. The scene of two trucks/ stuck on a bridge, becomes a powerful metaphor for stalemate and mutual paralysis, resonating far beyond its simple composition. *** SHIPPING: Worldwide shipping available *** CONDITION: in very good condition ***.
