Magazine / Periodical
Soft cover. Condition: Poor. Old wood-cuts (illustrator). Here is an old issue of Ballou's Monthly Magazine, being Volume XLI, No. 4, published in 1875. The magazine was very popular in its day. The contents present an assortment of fiction, poetry, and non-fiction. The condition of this issue is rough, but it is complete, and offers a touchstone of sorts to the past. This is the original issue, just as published, with sewn wraps. (Please read our full condition report, given below.) The essay on the Nithsdales is, on its own, worth the price of admission. The earl had joined the Jacobite rebellion. He was captured at the Battle of Preston, and hence imprisoned. TITLE : Ballou's Monthly Magazine ISSUE : Vol. XLI, No. 4 DATE : April 1875 EDITOR : Maturin Ballou (American Journalist and Author , 1796 - 1895 ? son of Hosea Ballou, first president of Tufts College) IMPRINT : Thomes & Talbot PLACE : 36 Bromfield Street, Boston STATUS : OP DETAILS : Contains few woodcuts and one page of silhouettes; advertising on the insides of the cover, front and back; volume pages 305 - 400 (96 pp); 6" x 9", pictorial wraps, sewn; cover edges are extended a bit (yapp edges). The pages are trimmed irregularly. CONTENTS : -- Verona (Italy) . with one woodcut -- The Confident a poem, with woodcut -- The Parrot Tribe, With 2 woodcuts -- The Whale Fishery- with 1 woodcut of a stranded whale -- Disinherited ! - or, The Mystery of the Headlands, a Story of the New Jersey Coast by Etta W. Pierce - conclusion of a serialized story. -- Myrick's Shanty - a complete story by Jane G. Austin -- Origin of the Maiden-Hair Fern, An Indian Legend - a poem by E. M. Adams -- A Woman's Story - a complete story - by Cora Chester -- Along the Road . a poem by C. Nye C. -- Story of the Countess of Nithsdale (the royalist Maxwells of the western Scottish border) . an anecdotal family biography by Prof. Seranos D. Patrick. [ The Countess of Nithsdale was famous for engineering the escape of her husband, William Maxwell, 5th Earl of Nithsdale, from the Tower of London in 1716 ] -- The Three Fortunes - A complete story by Mary Helen Boodey -- Will She Marry Him ? continuation of a serialized story by Florence Marryat -- Deus Omnipotens a poem by Albert Roland Haven -- April Weather - a complete story by Carrie D. Beebe -- Mademoiselle Sylphina, or, The Fortunes of a Castaway - continuation of a serialized story for juvenile readers by Elizabeth Bigelow. There is a central, vertical crease. BINDING : The thread is holding, and while the contents are intact, the issue as a whole is fragile. INTERIOR : Stains, smudges, and scattered foxing are throughout; the leaf with pp 389 & 390 has a very old tape mend on the bottom edge - this leaf was sliced cleanly, cutting the bottom portion of the taped text, which has been saved and lays between the leaves. AS I HAVE SAID, THE CONDITION IS ROUGH.
