Brossura. Condition: new. Bologna, 2025; br., pp. 104, cm 15x21. Libro.

Brossura. Condition: new. Modena, 2018; br., pp. 256. Travels to Discover the Source of the Nile, in the Years 1768, 1769, 1770, 1771, 1772, and 1773. In Five Volumes. Edinburgh: Printed by J. Ruthven, for G. G. J. and J. Robinson, Paternoster-Row, London, 1790. First edition. Complete in five volumes, with all plates and folding maps called for present. ESTC T51608; Blackmer 221; Nissen ZBI 617; Gay 44; Hilmy I, p. 91; Cox I, p. 388. Five volumes, quarto. A remarkably attractive untrimmed set in uniform contemporary full tree calf, the figured boards bordered in gilt; spines with gilt rules and decorative tooling, red morocco title labels lettered "Bruce's Travels" and circular black morocco volume labels numbered in gilt. The broad surviving margins and period bindings give the set exceptional character and considerable shelf presence. One of the great African travel narratives of the eighteenth century. Bruce travelled from Egypt through the Red Sea and Arabia into Abyssinia, now Ethiopia, reaching the springs at Geesh in 1770, which he identified as the source of the Nile known to classical geography, now recognised as the source of the Blue Nile. His account gave European readers an extensive description of Ethiopia, its court, religious traditions, political life, languages, landscapes and natural history, while also recording Egypt, Nubia, Arabia and the wider Nile region. The fifth volume, with the separate title Select Specimens of Natural History, Collected in Travels to Discover the Source of the Nile, in Egypt, Arabia, Abyssinia, and Nubia, is of particular importance. It gathers the natural history material from the expedition, with engraved illustrations after drawings by Bruce and his travelling companion Luigi Balugani, engraved principally by James Heath. The large folding maps provide the essential cartographical framework for Bruce's travels through the Nile regions and Abyssinia. The present set is complete with all plates and folding maps required for the first edition, including the natural history illustrations and the substantial folding maps shown in the photographs. Its untrimmed state is especially desirable: sets of this ambitious illustrated work are often encountered rebound or cut down, whereas these five volumes retain generous margins in their contemporary bindings. The bindings show rubbing, abrasion and wear to joints, spine ends and corners, with some age-related cracking and loss appropriate to a substantial working set of this period. Internally generally clean, with occasional spotting, offsetting and handling marks; the folding maps show expected creasing at folds and some age-related marking. Manuscript ownership inscription to the title page of Volume V. A highly appealing complete first edition of Bruce's monumental search for the source of the Nile: five untrimmed volumes in contemporary tree calf, complete with all plates and maps, and a cornerstone work for collections of Africana, Ethiopia, exploration, cartography and eighteenth-century travel.
