Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 160p. Illustrated title page. Small 8vo. Original full red cloth binding. Reprint of the 1835 Robert Davies, London edition. The authorship has been variously ascribed to Thomas Price, Robert Goadby, Mrs. Goadby and, Carew himself. The purported author, who characterizes himself as the Devonshire stroller and dog stealer, was born in 1693 and transported to America at some undetermined date in his youth. Carew describes his adventures in Maryland, Virginia, and farther north where, according to Howes, he operated confidence schemes among colonial suckers. Also described are his picaresque adventures among gypsies, on the Continent, and particularly in London. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! GYPSY 2 Language: eng.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Revised (= expurgated) edition of book published the prior year. 4-1/2" x 7-1/8", 248pp incl. prelims. Printed on acidic paper and bound in signatures in calf boards. Original spine is lost, and replaced in the course of a book repair some time in the middle of the 20th century with a strip of heavy black library tape over which is pasted a white title label. Heavy edge, corner wear to original boards. Binding is splitting both front and back, and boards remain attached mostly via the tape. Half title page is completely lost, and the front paste down is taped directly to the title page with a 1" strip of fabric tape. The pages are heavily tanned, with edge and corner wear and staining. The title page is particularly distressed. The fore margin is completely worn away, and the last few letters in each line of the extended title are illegible. One piece of text rendered unfortunately obscure is the publication date line, which appears to state "MDCCXCIV", though this is not certain. The tape strip has covered a few characters at the left edge of the title block, though these words can still be made out in their entirety. There is a 1/4" hole (which may be a cinder / burn hole) lower down on the page, fortunately in one of the few blank spaces. This edition precedes the main text with a two-page "To the Reader", which begins: "The proprietors of this edition beg leave to premise to the public, that they have taken the liberty of omitting the parallel which has been carried on in the former editions of this work, between Mr Carew and Tom Jones . .", and the main text has been reset. The pages are unmarked.
