Hardcover. xxix, [1], 168, [1] p.; 20.5 cm. Preserves original orthography except for making more uniform the use of capital letters. Contents: Publishers' note [gratitude to Norman Sykes for seeing the work through the press after Peel's death in 1949] -- Preface [1948] -- Introduction -- I The most principall and cheife heresies in R: Brownes booke -- II The opinions and dealinges of the Precisians -- III A generall table of the treatises followinge -- IV Certen slaunderous speeches against the present Estate of the Church of Englande published to the people by the Precisians. -- A beautifully written manuscript probably penned between 1583-85, in which `There is nowhere any indication of the author, but any student of Elizabethan church history who has used Richard Bancroft's detective works, published in 1593, Daungerous positions and proceedings, and A Suruay of the Pretended Holy Discipline, would say `Bancroft' almost immediately he began to read the manuscript. It seems extremely probable that it was this work, and Bancroft's activity in and near Bury St Edmunds in 1583, that commended him to Whitgift as the man to track down Martin Marprelate and bring both the Precisians under Cartwright and Separatists like Barrow, Greenwood and Penry within the meshes of the law. A brief sketch of his early career will serve to show how the manuscript fits into the picture.' (p. x) -- `It is difficult to exaggerage the polemical power of Bancroft's historical account. He used to advantage every discreditable incident, every squabble, and every scandal. The final picture of Puritanism was repellent and unattractive: and the mud has stuck.' (S. B. Babbage, Puritanism and Richard Bancroft, 1962, p. 24) VG orig. red cloth under gray boards in chipped and edgeworn dj.
