Milliyetciligin verili bir teoriden ziyade, devletin gorusleri cercevesinde kuramlastirilmaya calisildigi 1944-1960 yillari arasinda hamasi, asiri-tepkici bir soylem hakimdi. "On-Turkcu" kuramcilar bir yandan milliyetciligi devletten bagimsiz kilmaya calisirken, devletten de tam anlamiyla kopamiyor ve gelisen sosyalizm karsisinda hayli tedirgin davraniyorlardi. 1960-1980'li yillarda ise milliyetci elitlerin nispeten daha sakin, dis kaynaklara fazlasiyla referans yapan bir konumda olduklari gorulur. Ne var ki soz konusu surecte sosyalizmin kitlelere ulasmasi, devlette "sag-sol" kadrolasma savaslarinin doruk noktasina cikmis olmasi, "Ulus-devlet"le milliyetcileri yeni bir "cekinceli ittifaka" itmisti. 1990'li yillarda sosyalizmin cozulmesi, ucuncu kusak milliyetci aydinlarin onunu acti.
